(33,349 posts)6. Get a cheap AC/DC "buzz box", good self-darkening hood,
and a few pounds of 6011 rods (the farmer's friend -- welds through rust and crud).
Advice my grand-uncle gave me: "Crank it up until you burn it up, then back off a bit." That worked for learning to weld with oxy-acetylene and "stick" (aka SMAW).
