The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsUsually, I avoid anything having to do with religion as toxic. Today, I made a big exception.
There is a Jamaican community in Truro, Mass, where we usually go for vacations. They have a community church they gather at in Truro, and it was scheduled to be sold. This place was apparently THE center of/for their people in the area. Their community has nowhere near the $1.5 million that would be needed to buy the property and give them permanent continued use. Some well-heeled donor gave $500,000 (!!) to the cause, and offered to match more. So, even though it's against my every principle to support anything to do with religion, my respect and admiration for these people, with whom I have been interacting for four decades now, transcended my usual inclination, and got me to send a four figure contribution.
Never say never!

(13,596 posts)I know in my community. They are a positive force in our community. A couple other churches are heavily infested with MAGAts. Even there they have good people, but I see them as more like straight operators working for the mob. If they don't know they should so there's no excuse.
I know a pastor that is a really good guy who just got his own nice church. He's sunk a lot of money into renovating a cool old church. Bigger newer churches are eating guys like that up left and right. I'll be amazed if he makes it.
