Cruelty on a scale for which there is no verbal description

My daughter left with her man and their two daughters on a 10 day Spring Break halfway across the world to visit his eldest son. He is taking a year of school at the same high school where my daughter graduated in 2003. It's in Waimea, up the Kohala mountain, an extinct volcano at the northwest corner of the Big Island of Hawai'i. They got in last night, local time, and just sent us this photo of our two granddaughters gazing out at the Pacific Ocean from the place they rented.

It's cold and rainy here in the German Rheinland, and she sends us this pic of absolute paradise. I can't disown her--she already makes five times as much as I do, maybe more by now. there's nothing I can do about it now, but one day revenge will be mine. Oh, yes. Revenge WILL be mine.

In the meantime, I hope she and her family have the most fabulous time ever, and from the looks of it, there's not much that stands in the way of that:

FYI, the dark-haired boy is my daughter's partner's eldest son from his first marriage, who is taking a year at the same high school on the Big Island where my daughter went. The plan was just for one year, but that was the plan for my daughter, too. She ended up wanting to stay and graduate, which she did. He loves it there (hard to believe, right?), so, we'll see if he's still willing to leave it for good in three months.

They were pretty spectacular, too. That was 40 years ago, but I’ve heard they only got better.

I couldn't find a colo-recto doc who issued gift certificates, though. Oh, well.

(And yes, I lucked out in the family department. It has not always been the smoothest of rides, but we've beaten the cancer and heart issues so far, which we know won't always be the case).

I've never really had cabin fever in all my fairly severe winters, but lately I've been dreaming of spending a few weeks in scenes just like your daughter's photo. May she & her family have the time of their lives.

One of our neighbors met her when she was two years old, and immediately dubbed her “Madame 10,000 volts.”

Kailua High, class of 1965, Go Surfriders, etc… It’s surprising and gratifying that my old home town on the Windward Side looks so much the same. Honolulu was nearly unrecognizable, and I actually had made it back a few times. I took lots of photos — such a gorgeous piece of the planet.

You’ll be back.

This same daughter treated us to 2 weeks at that same spot two years ago for our 70th birthdays and our 40th wedding anniversary. After saving my entire inheritance to pay for her education, she vowed that if she ever made big money, she would pay me back. She kept her word. Kama’aina!
