Although most popular songs aren't autobiographical, this one apparently is.
I once heard a disk jockey on the radio explain that Pete Ham of Badfinger wrote this song about a woman he fell deeply in love with, whose name really was Dixie. Dixie Butz.
Well apparently Pete went off on tour with the band and didn't stay in touch, so she assumed he'd forgotten her. By the time he did make contact again, she had pretty much moved on with her life.
An apocryphal story, but I don't doubt it.
