Congratulations for a bright young progressive

I am very proud of my daughter.

She graduates this week with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering with Honors Research Distinction from Ohio State.



Academic accomplishments aside, she is a great person through and through. Proud progressive, votes like there is no tomorrow and even leads an organization committed to LBGTQ+ equality. I have always prided myself on my liberal street cred but she has taught me a few things over the years.

Such a proud Daddy of a great young adult.

She is still looking for her real career opportunity so if you happen to know anyone in the industry or have any recommendations, please give me a shout. The front doors of these industries are guarded by AI driven resume filters and sometimes you just have to find the right people on the inside.

#2. Send out resumes to every company that she wants to work for. HR depts will generally hold on to a qualified person’s application.

14. Thank you for the recommendations

She has been working Linkedin hard and has an impressive page there. Now that she is graduating, she will be amping up that presence with posting and being more forward about trying to make contacts.

She has been researching companies like crazy. I will send her this list to see if she missed anything but it isn't for lack of effort on her part.

The paradox of the whole situation is that job searching has changed drastically in ways that should be easier but actually make it harder. Searches for postings are easy and applications can be done in minutes if not seconds. But the net result is that companies are being inundated with the shear volume of applicants for jobs. In turn, the companies have turned to automated screening methods that prevent the vast majority of the resumes from ever being seen by humans.

We keep hoping that we can get the attention of a human who can recognize the wheat amongst the chaff.

Probably already on her list but my campus placement office was great back in the day. Professional engineering societies are a good starting point for openings, resume advice, and job hunting strategy. And relatively cheap to join for students and recent grads. In my field, ASME has tons of resources.

Best of luck and congrats again when she lands her first "real" job.

But they don't seen to be very good at the niche markets.

She has had the same frustration with the career fairs as well. It doesn't help to wander around 200 booths for various industries if there aren't any that can use her skills.

Fortunately for her, my wife used to be in a campus placement job so she can help with all of the soft skills. She just doesn't have the links to current employers.

My college roommate was making fun of that when she first committed.

But he and I went to the University of Miami. I told him that we could hardly make fun of THE Ohio State University as being pretentious when our school regularly just bills itself as THE U.

Miami fans have a particular disdain for OSU because they stole a national championship from us on a very dubious foul call (back when we were actually relevant to championships). So it was an adjustment to see them as the good guys.

It could have been worse. She could have gone to University of Florida. Ugh.

11. Congrats!! Our daughter is graduating next week also.

Ours is a film major, and we also raised a progressive. She is gay and spent her college years in a university abroad. She is coming home to hopefully work locally (we have some connections thankfully - it definitely can be hard getting started) and then save money for grad school. I know she will miss Europe, though, she very much enjoyed living in a country with affordable healthcare

That is awesome that she got to study oversees. I spent one year on a study abroad program in England and it changed me forever.

Glad you have some connections into the industry. I know a couple of kids in film but they are coming at it from completely different ends. One is graduating from the top program and has lots of opportunities. The other is going to have to really work the system and pay their dues.

It will be interesting to see how she adapts to being back to the states. I know I have always considered going back so I wonder if your daughter will as well.

13. Time for proud Moms and Dads to brag, and you must be thrilled.

Two Biomedical Engineering centers that I know of are San Diego and the San Francisco bay area.

There might be job openings at UCSD, UCSF and Cal Berkeley, so be sure to cruise job postings there.

And in that regard, perhaps some of her instructors may know someone who knows someone!!

Universities might be more open to outstanding grads than businesses hiding behind computers.
Berkeley hired me long ago to manage computers. It was exciting to work with so many Nobel Prize winners around.

Bay area warning! Bring a warm jacket for summers and short sleeves for winter.

Cost of living will always be an issue but provided that they pay decently, she does not have expensive tastes.

She has the benefit of graduating debt free so she has lots of flexibility to take a path driven by the career upside and not just the immediate financial requirements.

I think she would actually like California.
