He has been touring the country visiting friends...and I got to meet him!
It was memorable ...and awesome. He is even sweeter in person.
His journey brought him to MA, and we spent some time together over a week ago...
I must admit...he was visiting old friends from years ago in MA, yet gave me his precious time....
And it was precious.
We went out to dinner two nights....and he got to sample the local MA Mexican cuisine.
It was my first week back at work, so it was crazy....wish I could have had more time with my dear friend....
Also, I got private performances of his great musical talents!...Heaven on earth.
Since his departure he has been in contact while on the road... He should have arrived home in Albuquerque today....
It is wondrous meeting another DUer....We all have a bond.
Thank you, Ron...Thank you for being a friend. I will never forget our little space in time together....
Smile Ron!
And he also played the harmonica ....did not have my camera the first night..
Funny...as he played, he was so into it that he did not note the camera flash...
He was surprised when I told him about the pics of him playing!
Oh, those musicians!!
Peace & Love to all~

(6,421 posts)Oh!
He would have to answer...
Put on the music...started playing...
I brought out the camera as I listened...
But...I was only listening to him!
Must admit...
He is very talented ... is all I know... and heard

(7,658 posts)Just playing along with a practice CD put out by Jamie Aebersold, which feature drums, bass and keyboards but no lead instrument. Kind of intermediate level (if that) jazz and blues (I'm an old rocker but trying to improve my jazz chops from laughable to at least passable).
The harmonica stuff I did earlier was just basic off the top of my head blues.

... relatives in Philadelphia and I was probably just old enough to roam the city by myself (11-13?).
I got hopelessly, frighteningly lost and was starting to panic when this hippie guy walked by playing
this beautiful flute music.
.
Shades of the Pied Piper, I followed him entranced for who knows how long... but when I actually
came down from the high of that music, I recognized my surroundings and could find my way home
again.
.
Magic. Serious magic.
.
12 years later, I was windowshopping and saw a used flute that I could afford. Started taking
lessons, but after two months, I couldn't make consistent pure tones for more than a second or
two... if that -- and I realized it was not to be.
.
STILL love flute music, though now more Peruvian wooden flute.

Sweet story...
I love listening to flutes...It started with Ian Anderson...a bit later.

... you were a Muslim Black man with dreads (I didn't catch the Albuquerque reference in your "abq" and thought
it might be a Muslim name that I was unfamiliar with ). I thought you looked much like your avatar (I was
obviously projecting. I guess just because I look exactly like MY avatar, I expect everyone else to be the same).

How cool to be in New England (let ALONE meeting Dystopian!!!) this time of year -- the colors of the leaves must
have been incredible. Or was MA already PAST that point?

(7,658 posts)And Marley was, and is, another musical hero, right up there with Springsteen and Strummer.Yeah, it was quite beautiful.Still mostly green (although leaves were starting to turn some), but as you know, living in AZ, seeing lots of lush green in addition to rivers that actually are filled with water, is really nice too.Brattleboro, Vermont was especially nice. We had a big storm go through while Dystopian was visiting me and it was a wild ride getting her back home at the height of the storm.Lost power for 4 hours and even phones for 2.

... after The Hooters (remember "All You Zombies) and Santana (we missed both bands as we ran later) during
The Who's first so-called Farewell Tour.
.
They were incredible... just AMAZING!!! But a very large portion of the crowd was shouting for The Who during
their whole set (it actually sounded like they were booing). Strummer stood up to the mike and said, "FUCK YOU...
THIS IS OUR STAGE NOW!!!"

He became a rock god to me at that moment!!!

(7,658 posts)I hit the road for a while for the purpose of seeing old friends (and just needing to get away for a while too),but also to meet a couple of on line ones in person. Hung out with a recent (but no longer?) Duer in Oklahoma on the way east, too (And LOVE the CD of his blues/R&B band he gave me). So it was no act of any special generosity on my part to "take the time" to hang out with Dystopian; not any more than her taking the time for me too, (even if we crossed wires one night on meeting to see a local blues band.)
I had a great time with old and new friends and looking forward to hopefully getting back up that way before too long. But next time, no 5,000 miles behind the wheel (although I did find it relaxing most of the time). Leisurely Amtrak trips ( haven't flown in decades, and besides, I do like train trips)to see more of the cities I mostly avoided this time (I love big cities but not driving in or even through them). And my old and new friends will have to come visit me in the big cities or come get me to whisk me away to the countryside (hint hint). I did find rural and small town Massachusetts (and Brattleboro Vermont) really friendly and scenic. A lot more green than NM too....I WILL get back there....

(7,658 posts)So,....HI . It was good to meet and get to hang out with Dystopian (guitarman in Tulsa too) and good to just get away for a while , which i really really needed to do. As you know well, after being in the SW, it's always a little bit of a (pleasant) shock to see lush greenery and rivers that are filled with water. great seeing old and new friends too.Still gonna be more of big city tourist next time though.

(7,658 posts)Never have played a bari, or a soprano for that matter either. I wasn't kidding about working on jazz chops to just achieve being passable. More of a blues harmonica player that also doubles on flute and sax. Used to sing decently too, but age has kinda ripped my voice up.Always been a harp player mainly.
What kind of stuff do you play?
HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)I'm actually STARTING to get okay on guitar. As much as I wanted to, I've never really gotten the "close your eyes and play" thing down. Harmonica's okay, but I can't get the right sound (think Aykroyd in "The Blues Brothers" . I do some keyboard and I'm okay with a drum machine. I think I'm going to try clarinet since my youngest swapped it for my sax. At least the sax is being played regularly now. I could still pick one up (any size) and improvise or just fire off a song on request. My fingers hear the music on that instrument. It's the only one that's given me that feeling.
Now it just occurred to me. "What kind of stuff do you play?" - I immediately interpreted that as "instruments". If you mean music style, on the sax I'm all over the place - classical, rock, jazz (fast, slow, and big band), marching (used to), seasonal, and just raw improv for the sake of keeping my fingers limber. Guitar is mostly rock now. It's been a few years since I touched any of the other instruments (back injury sort of threw a monkey wrench in my lifestyle). I don't do rap or bubblegum pop and I've never tried doing polka music (nor will I). Some things are just not meant to be.
Oh, and I've never played soprano either, but I've always wanted to. I want one that's shaped like an alto rather than the clarinet shape Kenny G. uses. I'm considering getting Jupiter saxes. I can't afford them right now, but they're less expensive than Selmer (my real love), and they've got excellent sound quality. Hell, I might even get a tuba. That was a hell of a lot of fun to play and I still have my mouthpiece. Then there's that money problem. (sigh)

No rap, metal or polka here either. For some reason ,no one has ever expressed a desire to pay me to do any of those and by an amazing coincidence, I never had the desire to do them with or without getting paid.
I still use an old student model King (Zephyr) I got in a pawnshop 30 years ago, but with a fairly new Rovner metal mouthpiece. yeah, I've always wanted a Selmer, but I definitely understand, all too well, about trying to afford one. Actually, I like the sound I get with the Rovner on my old King Zephyr. Just going for a balls to the wall rock/soul/blues powerful sound that I get with the Rovner (Plastic reeds too; I know, some horn players think that's a sacrilege but they last forever and have a bright ballsy sound).
Interesting about your "my fingers hear the instrument" ; I'm just starting to get that way on sax and flute. But i have to work at it all the time to achieve that. Harp is the only one that sort of just always felt like it came to me relatively naturally.
Cool that your son is using your old horn too.

(47,675 posts)... the good one (forget what brand) was in the shop. The vacuum was aluminum or something and sounded like a horse with a hernia. It hadn't been treated well and I suspect it was a marching band instrument that spent a lot of time in the rain. Nothing against King saxes, mind you, but that's the only one I ever played and I still laugh about it. As for Selmer, I always wanted a Mark VI, but I don't play enough anymore to warrant the purchase. The Signet is a damn nice axe. I've completely disassembled it and put it back together at least three times (and adjusted the springs for action). It still has all original parts except for the mouthpiece cork. The pads are old, but still seal perfectly.
Shit. Now I'm going to have to ask her to bring it home in two weeks so I can have a blow at it.

(7,658 posts)(Damn that short term memory loss).
The Zephyr is just a student model King too, but I've found that with a good strong mouthpiece it gives me all the sound I want. Bought it in a pawn shop 30 years ago, and I guess I got lucky with a good one.A Mark 6 has always been a dream and probably will remain so. A couple of people have recommended Cannonballs for a good quality somewhat cheaper horn but I don't know much more than that. Again, just a lil' ol' harp player trying to improve my chops on flute and sax in my geezerhood, so my saxophone knowledge is really kind of limited...
Good to be able to do your own repair work too , on the springs etc. I'm as non-mechanically inclined as they come, and I've spent a lot of money over the years a few bucks at a time on minor tweaking and adjusting.
HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)I finally figured things out, but there were some serious panic moments. The first time I adjusted the action I was in 9th grade. It almost ended up as a box of parts on the way to the music shop. All I remember is staying up damn near the entire night (school night) working on it before I got it all reassembled correctly - and I was doing it on my bed.

(3,836 posts)I know Abq E Streeter and he is every bit as terrific as Dystopian says. He is crazy talented as well as
a real asset to the music scene in New Mexico and would be the same anywhere he lands.
Thank you for sharing!

(7,658 posts)typed "talented" after the all too accurate "crazy",lol.)
By the way, kids, Solara is a GREAT musical talent herself so I am especially humbled and honored by those kind words coming from her.
And yes, I am a real ass in the music scene here.Oops...you wrote asset.....Never mind(in my best Gilda Radner voice).
And to those who have never been here, I think people from elsewhere would be amazed if they realized how many killer musicians and singers we have in New Mexico. And Solara is one of our best.
