1920s - Chicago died: a man named Al Capone tried to make that town his own and called his gang to war with the forces of the law. Some officers, upon returning home after the shoot out, kissed their wives' faces.Late December, 1963 - During a very special time for him, Frankie Valli had a sexual liaison with a woman whose name he was later unable to recall. However the experience changed him.
Summer of 1969 - Bryan Adams got his first real six string, leading to minor injuries on his fingers. Subsequently, Jimmy quit and Jody got married. Despite such set-backs, the summer turned out to be the best days of Adams's life.

Any submissions out there? I'd prefer entries featuring either specific dates or textual evidence verifying the speculative dates of these important events

(19,374 posts)At that time there was no blues scene or not really any kind of scene in London. I used to go out and play my guitar in the streets and sing things with passing my hat down. I remember one particular night I was playing the guitar In a little allleyway just off of Wardour Street in Soho, and I got busted by the police. This policeman come up and dragged me and my guitar and my hat full of pennies off to the police station. Anyway, the next day I had to appear in Marlboro Street Police Court, and it was quite a day with the police officer giving his evidence: "I was proceeding in a southernly direction milord, when I heard strange sounds coming from Wardour Place, milord. A sort of boogie woogie music was being played. On further investigation, I saw the defendent standing there with a guitar and an old hat on the floor collecting pennies. Well, I decided that he was contravening a breach of the peace there as there was a traffic jam about five miles long down Wardour Street, wondering what all the fuss was about. So then I arrested the defendent". "Ah, just one moment, officer. Well, what is this boogie woogie music here we're talking about?" said the Magistrate. "Oh, well, milord", said the officer getting out his notebook, obviously been doing up his homework, "it's a kind of jazz-rhythm music peculiar to the American Negro". "Oh, and what was the defendent doing playing this kind of music there in Wardour street?" said the Magistrate.
Anyway, I got off with a caution a years' conditional discharge. But I'll always remember that policeman and his boogie woogie music. So don't try to lay no boogie woogie on the king of rock and roll.

... to be discharged from the Army over there (it's such a FINE place -- Bavaria -- that I had
considered doing the same thing). The Germans appreciated street musicians and artists and
he made an EXCELLENT living off of the coins and bills thrown in his open case. I'm not sure
if he was required to have a license or not... I just know the polizei never rousted him. He was
VERY good (he made some extra money cutting a German version single of "The Lion Sleeps
Tonight" .
.
He DID have to find a business owner every year to vouch that he had a regular job with
his/her company, though. Even though he literally made 3x the income playing on the
street than he would have at most factory jobs, he would not have been able to extend
his work visa for that.

(29,149 posts)Confederate Soldier Virgil Caine serves on the Richmond and Danville Railroad, but union General George Stoneman regularly tears up the tracks in order to interrupt the flow of supplies. That leaves Caine and his compatriots hungry--just barely alive, in fact. These were, in fact, the closing months of the Civil War. As Caine recalls, confederate capitol Richmond had fallen to union forces by May the 10th. It was a time that Virgil remembered "oh so well."

Next, he was gonna be 22, but cried about it, because there was nothing to do.

(6,829 posts)Two thousand, zero-zero: the party is declared "over," a mistake may have been made, and we are now out of time. Given the situation, it is postulated that the optimal solution is to enjoy one's self as if it is December 31, 1999 - midnight, which it is. The author does admit he was sleeping when he wrote all of this.

(23,244 posts)... to Al Stewart's masterwork on the 20th century, "Past, Present, and Future," in which he powerfully chronicles the pre-World War I naval arms race between Great Britain and Germany, Hitler's rise to power by way of the death of Ernst Roehm on 6/30/34, the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union and subsequent war on the Eastern Front, with battles from Smolensk, Viasma, and Orel to Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk, which led to the fall of Berlin and a minor soldier's imprisonment in the Siberian Gulag for alleged Nazi sympathies. There's much more, but only Stewart can tell it in the way it's told.

(50,559 posts)It was just before dawn.
One miserable morning in black forty-four
And the forward commander was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn
And the generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held off the enemy tanks for awhile
And the Anzio bridgehead was held at the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives
It was dark all round, there was frost on the ground
As the Tigers broke free
And no-one survived from the Royal Fusilliers Company C.
They were all left behind. Most of them dead, the rest of them dying.
And that's how the high command took my daddy from me.
