My grandkids are omnivores.

Jack was 4 or 5 when his dad ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell.
"What are those?"
"Oysters. They make these shells and live in them."
"What do they taste like?"
"Well...oysters."
"Can I have one?"
"Sure."

Dad gave him one.
He ate it.
"Can I have another one?"

Last week mom and dad ordered escargot.
Charlotte is 5.
"What are those?"
"Escargot."
"What's escargot?"
"They're snails, cooked in garlic butter."
"SNAILS!? Eeeeewwwww."
"They're really good. Wanna try one?"
"Um...uh...(very tentatively)...OK."
Tries one.
"WOW! These are GOOD! Can I have another one?"

These kids ain't picky eaters.

1. Ah, good taste. Bodes well for their future if they learn proper nutrition.

Much better to have kids that eat a wide variety of foods than those who are extremely picky eaters.

The kid next door to me couldn't go to 6th grade camp with his classmates because his mother let him get away with ONLY eating Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and cheese pizza with the crust trimmed. Period. That was what he lived on. And the camp wouldn't cater to him, so he wouldn't/couldn't go. To me, that is just irresponsible, highly irresponsible, parenting.

2. Jack lived on peanut butter, crumbs from under sofa cushions, and air for a year.

He was weaned at about 18 months.
And then had no interest in food for about a year.

We all figured that just like no cat ever starved to death in a tree (ever see a cat skeleton in a tree? ),
no kid ever starved to death if there was food available.

Eventually he came around and now he's a real 'foodie'.

would ONLY eat potato chips! Parents and doctors said OK, so camp agreed. Don't know where he is now, but he seemed to do ok and survive the summer.

at first I thought it was great and was so proud, then it dawned on me: the little shit had developed VERY EXPENSIVE tastes...

the other son is happy with burritos 3 times a day - and the niece could live on mac and cheese.

Why the heck didn't she get my habit of reading menu from right to left, price first??? Well, her husband has to deal with it now!

Thirty years ago, I took a date to her first French restaurant and suggested that
we both get escargots as an appetizer. I told her that, despite being relatively
small, they would come out on HUGE platters.
.
Why?
.
So that you have a chance to eat them ALL before any escape from the plate.
.
Despite my ignorant teasing... she LOVED them (though she DID watch them
for awhile before trying the first one).

7. Traveled around France when daughters were 3 and 6.

Older daughter always has been experimenter, younger not; prefers plain and simple.

In Paris, I ordered escargots appetizer; older daughter ate entire order and asked for another! Through the trip, younger daughter hadn't been too thrilled with the food, had a lot of pommes frites, but on the plane back, ate 2 full airline dinners!!!

Nice part: they BOTH call me for recipes, now that they're 24 and 27.

my granddaughter wouldn't eat vegetables. She then discovered that she liked green beans -- not fresh ones, but cold, right out of the can. She would only eat them if she could dip them in ketchup. Personally, I found this disgusting, but I figured what the heck, she was eating a vegetable at last. So no one in the family said anything about it.
