Some of you may recall my heart wrenching posts about the loss of my sons dog, Bam...in May.
He was a broken man, and I still weep for him...Bam is my avatar.
Jonas was so overwhelmed with grief...said he would maybe think about getting another dog next year.....
Two months later I caught him on the computer ... viewing the shelter where he found Bam.
A couple days later we were in the car with my poor freaked out doggie..she panics in the car.
But all family members and pets were mandated to be at the meeting...
My son lives in the apartment over the garage...Maeve would have to like him.
All went well...Awesome! In spite of her fear, she simply tolerated him. That was good enough in the moment...
I looked at the little dog and told him his head was too big for his body and he had no ears.
Sadly, (unbeknownst to me at the time...I dont know about these things) someone had clipped them. He is about 2-3 years old, and was found traveling with a young female...less than a year old. The people at the shelter thought she must have been his daughter...She was adopted immediately.
This is their first time together and first kiss...
Now my son belongs to the little doggie..
A few days later he came home. Jonas named him Lynyrd Skynyrd! He is a musician and what a funny name! Maeve and Lynyrd puppy fighting on the couch ... on day one:
He is a great pillow:
He was lying on my quilt .... I took this photo before he chewed a huge hole in it!
Maeve was also depressed when Bam left us...
She now has her life and spirit of a puppy...Thanks to Lynyrd.
He creates magic when going to the vet...
Everyone cracks up when the receptionist calls: Lynyrd Skynyrd?
The vet asked him... What do you say when you call for him...Freebird?
Jonas said he was still being trained, and usually comes home saying: Lynyrd, whats that smell?
Pit bull. Yes. He was immediately put on meds by the vet because of a rash.
There was major construction going on in the house and Maeve was in a panic.
One morning when Jonas was getting ready to go to work....Maeve was freaking out and I said I would give them both meds. He had an antibiotic...Maeve, a Xanax. I made a peanut butter sandwich with their meds....She was so out of it she just dropped her piece on the floor. Lynyrd, the little piggy, quickly snatched it... I, without thinking (he had just been here for a couple of weeks) grabbed the sandwich from his mouth to save him from sedation. I just took it from him ... my hand in his mouth. No problem. He did not clamp down like any other dog... He let me take it ... looked up at me with sad eyes as if to say: Why did you do that?
I love him. He is an imp! And has destroyed shoes, my sons Slayer hat from the last concert, my quilt....Maeve is really paranoid..I must be in sight when she goes outside...But now she can be a dog again....They take off and romp in the woods...and she doesnt look back ...
Life is good.
My son is happy...I am happy...Maeve is happy...
As I think about the bulbs I will plant around his grave....I know Bam is resting in peace knowing that Jonas had the heart to rescue another...Jonas and I still tear up when we speak of him....
Thank you for reading...it was long...
peace & love to all~

While still in mourning...
I just wanted my son to be happy again...

(20,219 posts)so so hard to lose our innocent loving furrybabies. But sometimes, adopting another baby soon is exactly the right thing.
When I lost my TeenyBeenyWeeny 5 years ago, I was totally destroyed. After a few months I realized that the emptiness and grief were no way to live....staying IN the pain wasn't helping Weeny, and for the month or so before she left there were mystical signs that something was coming.
So I got another Pomeranian, Shrimpy (in my photo) and it was the best thing I could do. For both of us.

(102,291 posts)I lost my beloved furry girl, Tallulah, four months ago to the day on Friday. It hurts especially every morning--our special time when we would just cuddle before starting the day. Sometimes, though, I can still fill her pushing me forward (in her herding girl way) when I do my daily walk--sadly without her.
I soooo miss having a dog, but I need to grieve for her a bit longer and I'm in flux right now so I couldn't adopt another even if I were ready.
Bless you and yours for doing so. Dog lovers are the best people on earth.

(6,421 posts)Thank you for sharing in our happiness...
I am so very sorry for the recent loss of your beloved Tallulah...
I truly understand. When I lost my lovely Maxi about 15 years ago...the grief was far too prolonged.
She passed in my arms. I was not able to take another dog into my heart for too many years...
And finally the urge came....and I went to the shelter and met my Maeve. Ive had her for three years...
When Bam passed... YellowRubberDuckie posted this...Its beautiful...and I was so thankful to see it.
And in this moment am in tears again...memories of Maxi and Bam...while Maeve and Lynyrd smile at me.
You will know when the time comes .... I promise.

I hope to join you in the next month or two. I should be moved into a cat-friendly
lease by then. I've been looking at local shelters online and wish that I could bring
one of the little furballs home RIGHT FUCKING NOW!!!!!
.
There was a PERFECT little tuxedo cat a couple of weeks ago... but they're not all
that uncommon (fortunately for me... unfortunately for them) in the shelters.

I'm so glad for all of you -- all four!!!

Thank you for the kind words...
Oh! I know what you are going through, and my heartfelt hopes that you will be moving soon...
You need that kitty! Pets are people, too....with them, we are never alone.
I was yearning for a dog for months, but knew I had to wait until spring when school was out so that I would have an
entire summer to bond with my new friend...I went directly to the shelter on the last day of school...and was online for months looking at dogs and dreaming of when the time would come.
I must share this with you!!
Its really not appropriate....but...I know how you are
Lynyrd goes out to do his thing...lifts his leg, pees...
And then does his next duty....
I have never seen anything so bizarre .. neither has my son!
As soon as he unsquats, he bolts! He barrels around like a little cannonball at full speed! Running as fast as lightening in huge circles kicking up dirt and leaves as he runs full speed around and around the house...just keeps going. We dont get it...Just watch him running for joy? The excitement of relief? Pride? Its too funny...something we will never understand ....
Do you?
I cant wait until you have your own kitty! And of course...it will be a LOLcat filled with love...
And.....you will post pictures!
Coming soon: MFM & friend....forever love.

(14,912 posts)#2: I'm surprised you haven't been called a racist or all sorts of names for having a Rebel Flag bandana on him....
#3: A Xanax for a dog?? Really?? Dayuuuummmm... I have a hard time getting enough for myself, how the heck do you get them for a dog???
#4: Again... BEAUTIFUL PIT!!!

(6,421 posts)Thank you, Ghost in the Machine
He is handsome and quite comical-looking
Ahhh...The Rebel Flag!
Jonas plays metal, but loves the old music...
I listened to him sing Simple Man during open mic a few weeks ago ...he borrowed someones acoustic as he didnt plan on being up there...just on a whim.
So the entire thing with Lynyrd is as it is...
The band...southern rock...so rebel flag...
Its just a humorous thing he toys with...its nice to see him smile.
Lynyrd has this dog tag:
So yes, Lynyrd is a redneck dog...all the more reason to laugh at him...and with him. Nothing to do with racism...He is just a good old boy...
I was reading online about sedation for dogs with anxiety....I feel so badly for my Maeve. After extensive research I found many examples of meds given to dogs ...Xanax being one of them. Didnt get it from the vet .....its mine...Jonas was the one who insisted on giving it to her the first time, so shes really only had to have it about three times. Alas, going to the vet when I can afford it to find something ongoing for her..She does need something to calm her at times ... her fears make me sad But being with another dog....and two dogs make a pack...She willingly roams the woods again without me....She has Lynyrd, they have a blast!
So there you go!
TMI!

... in a pet carrier. I had gotten a sedative from the vet and gave her half-a-pill. She
NEVER lost complete consciousness, but the translucent membranes of her eyes
closed and she made this CONSTANT annoying (but barely audible) "ehhhhhhhhhhh"
sound the whole journey.
.
When I got to the check-in security checkpoint, there was an older woman who was
obviously training a very young man. She pointed to my pet carrier and said to him,
"Show me what you do with that."
.
He picked up the carrier, looked at (and listened to) Greycat for quite a while, broke
into a HUGE grin, looked at the older agent AND me and said, "That cat's fucked UP!!!"
.
"Yes, he IS very intoxicated. Now, show me how you check the cage."

(1,328 posts)I remember when your son lost the other dog and it was so heartbreaking. He'll never forget Bam but he has room to love another.
We have lost several dogs over the years and no matter how much it hurt having another made all the difference in the world.
Our current baby is 3 years old, We are late 60's so he will probably be our last. I am already dreading the day that we lose him.

Thank you for remembering....it was a while ago.
You are so right about getting another dog....he just didnt think it would happen so quickly...
Its hard not to think about losing our pets after experiencing past losses...
We can only enjoy each day with them....
May you have many wondrous years of love with him...

Jonas loves him...and buddies they are!
They do everything together...
Lynyrd went to band practice with him for the first time this week!
They were just recording, so no loudness...
Oh...he is thinking of getting a little side cart on his bike for Lynyrd...
Good grief!

(41,989 posts)I love pit bulls. I had one in the past. We got our newer dog from a shelter (we actually saw him on TV as 'adoptee of the week"
They said he was half lab, half Rottweiler. Well, what we got as he grew older was what looks like pure or near pure Rottie with a tail. I forget he looks scary to other people. He's a big goof.
Sorry for your son's loss, and congratulations on your new family addition! They look very happy, and I wish them joy.
(My husband had a dog for 17 years, he's never quite gotten over her loss, she'll always own a little piece of his heart)

My oldest son has three pit bulls...they are precious.
Jonas was actually going to the shelter to meet another dog, but there was a mix-up.
So they asked him if he wanted to take a look at the little guy behind the desk.
He wasnt even in a kennel...so mellow that he was hanging with the staff
Oh...the Rottweilers! They are huge! I used to dog sit for my sister, and her dog weighed more than me...
I had to walk Rena, and she was so gentle and easy on the leash.....another big goof!
And yes, we never get over the loss ... they do take a piece of our hearts with them...very true.
Thank you for your kind words and congratulations

You made me google
I had not heard of Shorty ... and read his bio.
I watch animal planet....and dont know how I missed this.
Now I must check the schedule so I can watch the show...
An amazing man....!!
So Im happy that he would approve
I wish I knew the life Lynyrd had before he was left on the streets...or maybe not.
I dont understand why someone clipped his ears
All I know is that he is a bundle of boundless love...and is very much loved.

(10,129 posts)Not sure if you use netflix, but that`s how we ended up watching. He`s truly one of the best advocates for Pits I`ve ever seen. And I`m confidant that whatever is in Lynyrds past, he is now in a place where he will be loved and cherished and that he knows it.

(33,688 posts)And it's wonderful that your son got him from a shelter. When my dear cat Max passed a couple of years back and I was ready for another kitty I went back to the same shelter from which I had adopted him. A big ol' Turkish Van boy picked me out right away and started following me around as I looked at other cats, none of which seemed to be the right cat for me. When I sat down in the waiting area he plopped down on the next chair and gave me a look that was pure "OK, you've seen the rest of them, now take me home." And I did. Butch has been with me for two years two Saturdays from now.
People who adopt shelter animals are the best! May Jonas and Lynyrd have a long and happy time together.
