Gotta admit - I'm not getting the Twitter attraction

I created a user ID after talking with a co-worker and seeing Twillions™ of references to the latest tweet or hashtag. After a few days of poking around, I'm not seeing the point. I guess I'm spoiled after 8 years of the DU format.

Anyone?

1. The primary way I use Twitter is as a news feed.

Find a few people who interest you. Follow them.

They will post links to web articles that you may not have found on your own.

They will retweet the tweets of others who you may find interesting, and you may want to follow as well.

Twitter has replaced RSS feeds for me.

2. Yes and no...

I've been a user for a couple of years, but I rarely go there to share my pearls of wisdom. snort. I do enjoy reading some celebrity tweets or follow a particular event... I wanted to see "Seminar" in NYC but couldn't make it there so I followed those celebrities who were parsing out bits of information. Also, Jane Fonda had some great tweets regarding the new film, "The Butler".

Maybe I'm just too self-centered to give a rat's ass about what other people can tweet in 140 characters or less.

Even texting, the only thing I do that for is communication within the family.

And Facebook...I do that, but again, I want to see more substance than just someone's lame comment on something else.

So anyway I tried it, and thought the whole thing sucked. Guess I am just an old curmudgeon....

And if my cellphone were any dumber, it would have a crank on the side (besides me).

I'm only 55, but my curmudgeonliness is coming along nicely.

Count me in -- being retired and hating cellphones, I went with the most basic model:



I shun all social media and the only tweeting I do is when I see chickadees and want to say hi.

Yes, I'm a curmudgeon but more along the lines of this excellent definition:

A curmudgeon's reputation for malevolence is undeserved. They're neither warped nor evil at heart. They don't hate mankind, just mankind's absurdities. They're just as sensitive and soft-hearted as the next guy, but they hide their vulnerability beneath a crust of misanthropy. They ease the pain by turning hurt into humor. . . . . . They attack maudlinism because it devalues genuine sentiment. . . . . . Nature, having failed to equip them with a serviceable denial mechanism, has endowed them with astute perception and sly wit.

Curmudgeons are mockers and debunkers whose bitterness is a symptom rather than a disease. They can't compromise their standards and can't manage the suspension of disbelief necessary for feigned cheerfulness. Their awareness is a curse.

Perhaps curmudgeons have gotten a bad rap in the same way that the messenger is blamed for the message: They have the temerity to comment on the human condition without apology. They not only refuse to applaud mediocrity, they howl it down with morose glee. Their versions of the truth unsettle us, and we hold it against them, even though they soften it with humor.

5. It's a great tool for me for work.

I get a lot of use out of it.

I don't really use it for personal use, but we're bascially forced to use it at work and I enjoy it for that purpose.

7. I think DU spoiled me, too. In a good way. ;-)

I look at tweets for my son's high school bands, but am not a twitterer (tweeter?) and I'm on facebook mainly to see my niece and nephews kids' photos... two new great nephews in the past 6 months, and one has a just-turned-12-year-old sister so it's been fun to see her as she grows up. They live in Massachusetts and I live in California, so not too many visits. One of my three brothers uses facebook so I stay connected with family using that, as well as email.

I like DU because it all doesn't just rush by, and it's so easy to look up old posts/threads. It's hard enough for me to listen to the radio, except for NPR and Pacifica type stations. The information zips by and my mind is still working on the previous few sentences spoken!

Hi,
I like it, I follow @MarsCuriosity and a bunch of the engineers from JPL, sports writers, political writers, chefs, musicians and others. One of the musicians I follow is the cello+ player in the Avett Brothers, fun to follow. Also interesting to get real time updates from people in crisis situations like when the uprising in Iran was taking place.

Some people I follow for a bit and they either post too much or all they post is promotional crap. I do like getting an "inside" snapshot of some mundane things some famous people post.

I don't do FB at all. But I do love DU and find it so cleanly organized it is wonderful. To each his/her own.
