ok so I don't have cable tv...

at least not lately...and when I did I didn't watch it much...

Also I usually assume if something is important, I will find out about it...
so I began to hear about this ancient aliens thing on the History Channel.

Are you f*&^%$# kidding me?

Don't they understand this stuff is BS?
This is really, frightening to me, passing this stuff off as history.

Totally BS. I mean if they wanted to call it....
"stuff that is really really far out there and woo and respectable archeologist debunk"
I might be ok with it.

Wow. This is another reason for me not to get cable. Why?

At least the Hitler stuff was (mostly) reality based, but much of their fare is Nostradamus/ancient alien crap and has been for quite some time.

History just wasn't entertaining enough for the masses, so they have had to resort to keeping the name of the channel but filling it with commercially sellable programming......like (and I am not making this up, I just googled it) Swamp People, Pawn Stars, Hatfields and McCoys, Ax Men, Ice Road Truckers, and American Pickers.

You are not alone in your disgust for what is passing as programming on the "History" channel.

In the past few years, however, things have changed. The History Channel has relegated most of their shows about planes, guns, and fascists to their mildly psychotic offshoot, the Military History Channel. This has left them with a lot of newly available airtime, which they've used to... go completely nuts.

First, they changed their official name from 'the History Channel' to simply 'History,' apparently hoping to trademark an entire academic subject. Paradoxically, however, their programming has less than ever to do with the study of the human past. Nowadays, operating under the premise that 'everything becomes history as soon as it happens,' they just make shows about whatever the hell they want.

I have everything, from Maxx to Encore to Starz and the rest. The movies are increasingly old chestnuts they keep replaying. The Western channel, for example, is a cycle of about two dozen movies they've kept running for the last five years. They're obviously cutting costs by showing only crap. And there's also the problem that there are fewer and fewer new movies being made that are watchable.

Now it's 'TLC,' and not 'The Learning Channel.' Maybe they didn't want to scare anybody away with that whole "Learning" promise. Or maybe too many people took it as a threat rather than a promise. And they're probably hoping that those of us who remember what the letters TLC once stood for, will soon forget.

Not happenin'.

recently had a "documentary" about scientists who discovered a mermaid's body. But the military covered up, so nobody knows... even though they made a documentary about it. Shh!! It's a secret, a government cover up secret. So don't tell anyone about the mermaids.

What was really unnerving was that the style was very much like a documentary. I stumbled onto it about a third of the way in and actually thought I was watching a documentary. I'm thinking maybe they had discovered some prehistoric fish that they had thought was extinct, but then it got really woo-woo stupid, so, no.

to make us more stupid.

Think about this for a second... how much intelligence goes into a "reality show"?

Did you ever hear of the saying "you will acclimate to your environment"?

This is very true. I honestly don't think this is capitalism at work, but a long term plan of social reform. Uninformed people are far easier to control. If future generations don't know history then it is easy to repeat the mistakes of the past for singular gain. Lets face it... our youth today don't know crap about history. Find one who actually knows who Jimmy Hoffa is. Better yet... find one who knows who knows who Ed White was and why he died.

I made sure that my kids knew important events in history and prominent historical figures (they also know most lyrics to classic rock songs). If they were feeling "too bad to go to school", I would assign them a book report on such figures as Imhotep, Booth, etc... At least then they learned something.

Sorry, on a rant here.... American television just ticks me off with the stupidity of their programming.
