(66,369 posts)I love nurses. Thank God for the profession. My dad was a RN, his mother was an LPN; so I grew up with suitable respect for the nurses in my life.
You rock!

That explains why you do, though, you're beyond a physician extender, me thinks!

(47,675 posts)It's a royal pain in the ass. Fortunately, the pain in the ass is free (online courses to sleep through), courtesy of the state. She's got an M.S. - she could WRITE the material for those things. But, she still has to rack up the required number of credit hours.

(20,453 posts)Actually, I'd like to see the breakdown of how all the states pays for regulating the professions, cause when you look at the cost and time, it certainly should.
In this day and age, I think many of these credits could be earned without having to travel to conferences, and that they could be put on locally, using the same classrooms she would be teaching from, eh?

(47,675 posts)She groans at some of the bullshit and 100-level class stuff in those "courses". Shit. I've been with her since '84 and just by observation, I could write those damn scripts. She still has to do conferences anyway (including an all day seminar in Harrisburg on Columbus Day). The school was closed, but she had to work.
Sorry. It just pisses me off.

(20,453 posts)Some of the continuing ed I've had to get is a thorn in the side of me off (where I have to go, what I have to cover, HOW I have to obtain this "update" . But, if you are a subject expert in presenting the continuing education on which you are supposed to be getting, you should be able to earn credit BY PUTTING ON THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM. Educators should understand this (I'm one, too).
OTOH, there are some things that based on either hard or soft science, we should all get an update to. Example in education is the movement to privatize (thanks Arnie Duncan), charter or cyber schools, you get the idea.
Just my two cents!

(47,675 posts)My wife had to administer standardized "fill in the oval" tests to her kindergarten children. Most just didn't get the concept. They'd circle the correct answer, but an "X" by it, or otherwise indicate the right answer, but they didn't translate that into which oval to fill in. They've always been bullshit and the bullshit is just getting deeper. The testing companies are doing rather well.
