I have frontotemporal dementia: https://www.theaftd.org/what-is-ftd/disease-overview/
It is getting worse. I saw my doctor Friday. He decided it is time to take a driving test. That will be Thursday after noon.
https://www.theaftd.org/posts/uncategorized/driving-and-ftd/
I will check in with the results. Wish me luck.

Need to use cruise control a lot.
If it comes to this, it will.
I've been able to drive for almost 55 years now and if it isn't safe to do so any longer, so be it.
Best of luck Steve!

(8,088 posts)Less friction with the pavement means Cruise Control can think you're going slower than you are and it might speed up more than is safe. At least that is what a car guy told us and it makes some sense.
Hope you get to drive a while longer. I fear my time to hand over the keys is coming sooner than later, for similar reasons. Arthritis in spine making for poorer nerve impulses to arms and legs.

(2,125 posts)...allows for consideration of more factors in the driver's condition, skills, possible deficits, and other more tangential aspects (other chronic health conditions, vision, if any medications affect driving, etc).
A longer assessment can also help to provide the driver with any possible assistance -- there are evidently occupational therapists/driving coaches who may help fine-tune or suggest workarounds. They can also educate the driver and any family members about things to look out for over time that might suggest a change in ability.
I got most of this from an excellent general article on the topic:
https://drivingtoindependence.com/a-guide-to-driving-assessments-for-seniors-with-dementia/
And also a more technical summary of research -- I did some grad school in psych, so I tend to nerd out.
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10187703/
Omaha Steve, I too have benefited from your posts...and will continue to do so! Best of luck.

(59,635 posts)Granted, you have had a long time to get adjusted to this, but that begs the question whether it is possible to really get "adjested" to something that remains a moving target.
One of my best friends in Dallas has a B-I-L who gravely damaged his frontal lobes in a motorcycle accident when he was 20 (about 50 years ago), and whereas he is fully cognizant, he has little capacity for logic and no emotional stamina whatsoever. He flies off the handle if the shower water is off by 5 degrees in either direction, so obviously he hasn't been able to drive at all. Road rage gets you killed in Texas. If he sees a problem (the latest is black mold), if he decides it has been present in a car, he will never set foot in that car, whether or not there is any factual basis for this. My friend's wife is his twin sister, and she has been putting up with this as his unofficial caregiver for fifty years..
People can make light of this kind of affliction, but it is burden on both the caregivers and the victim, at least, as long as the victim is aware of the situation.
Kudos for your coping, no matter what the result this time. Far from everyone that travels this road does so as calmly.

(5,789 posts)My family is down to 3 of us remaining siblings. We are all seniors, and from my end, both of my sisters have cognitive impairments (one is diagnosed as such and has been all of her life; the other sister is undiagnosed as far as mental, and it is my speculation alone. But she lives in a state that has legal and medical marijuana, and she is a daily patient because of aches and pains, so I know much of what I experience of her personality could be the use of medical MJ, and I don't judge her or have an opinion; it is her choice.
I have had recent trauma from a concussion and, most recently, a slip/fall that jarred my whole body. It was an accident that put me off work for a few weeks, so I have been on DU more than ever.
I am really sensitive to our situation because, as seniors, major decisions need to be made, and wills/documents should be in order so that it is not a mess for the survivors.
It is especially difficult because I am the only one lucid enough to realize these circumstances, and we don't have anything in place to protect the vulnerability that can occur at any time to any one of us.
I wonder at times if I suffer from the initial stages since it can come on slowly and progress.
You are a treasure I have always enjoyed your input and hard work on this site. Best wishes, OS, I look forward to reading your Thursday update.

(39,875 posts)FTD is something that runs in my family also. For us it's a genetic inheritance from our mother, and her father, and we're not sure how far back it goes. It's lucky to be living now because new research is being done on FTD like never before. We're hoping and praying for a breakthrough. Good luck, dear Steve.

(29 posts)The DMV has a practice test online. The practice test is drawn from the bank of questions asked for the actual test. I set it for 99 questions and ran it for 2 weeks, daily, until I felt confident. They ask far fewer questions on the actual test. By the time I took it, they were all old friends.

(54,494 posts)I am rapidly getting dementia. Simple words and simple math have become more difficult within the past year. My Prim Care Doctor wasn't alarmed but I can tell there is definitely a big change.
I tried to find out how to renew my Dr License last week and after 2 1/2 hours on the useless DMV web site I gave up on trying to figure out why they would not let me make an appointment. Finally I went to Reddit for some decent info. It seems that you can renew it on line only 2 consecutive times in CA. Why doesn't their web site say that?!?!?!?
Then, to make "an appointment" there is more confusion (naturally). I have no idea what to do and I live only 2 blocks from the DMV. I "think" you have to go in to the DMV with some secret code on your phone and once you get into the DMV you show someone/something your cell phone secret code and that is supposed to be your "appointment". It sounds bogus. I assume that I will have to stand in line for 2 hours just to be told that it is incorrect and I need to stand in at least one more line. Since I literally live a 5 minute walk away it would be easier to wait at home and walk over once my "secret appointment number" at my appointment time. Since this is the CA DMV they do NOT make sense at all and love to torture people. The DMV are sadists!
I hope your local DMV is run better than mine. I have to get a new photo and eye test. This will take an entire day since the DMV lines are literally around the block and have been since 1988 when I moved here.
