(73,557 posts)Yeah, some of it was 2 cents, or 3.
But, a pack of Snaps, a pack of gum, & 2 Mary Janes were a dime.
A 7 ounce bottle of Mountain Dew was 7 cents at that store.
A couple dimes got us candy & a bottle of pop, and 3 cents change!

(125,905 posts)in a closet in my grandma's cabin - IIRC it had been painted by a relative or a family friend - and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I didn't understand why the grownups wanted to keep it stored away in the closet and I wasn't allowed to have it for myself. So disappointed!
As to shag carpeting - my house once had orange shag carpeting in a couple of upstairs rooms. It doesn't any more, but before I could remove it I discovered that it's really hard to get cat vomit out of shag fabric.

(37,598 posts)The house I live in now originally had brown shag carpet. One of the first things we did after moving in was replace that awful carpeting.
I can just imagine that black velvet painting hanging on a wood paneled wall.

(598 posts)I remember when grocery stores gave out s&h green stamps. Along with my mom, I dutifully pasted them into the stamp books to take to the Green Stamp store to redeem for wonderful things.
Every once in a while, I think of something from my childhood and remember "Hey, we got that from the stamp store."
Best regards,

(37,598 posts)I walked by myself to school starting at age 5. The school was 5 blocks away. I walked home for lunch and walked back to school after lunch (which was often a hot dog and a bowl of Lipton chicken noodle soup).
I recently told my 32 yr. old son about going home for lunch and going back to school after I ate lunch, and he was astounded. Wow, if they had let us do that nobody would have ever come back to school, he said. Well, my mother made me go back, I said.
Our school had a summer garden program. You had to sign up for it, and it was free. In the summer, youd walk to school around 8 am where there was a bus waiting to take all the kids out to a farm somewhere (I wasnt quite sure where, because I often daydreamed looking out the window as we rode). Each kid got an allotted plot of land and hoes to hoe the dirt and vegetable seeds to plant. There were adults there to help you learn what to do. Around noon the bus took you back to school, and you walked home from there. I remember bringing home a huge bag full of green beans several times. I dont remember what else we planted. If you got your gardening and weeding done early enough, some adults would take you to a fishing pond on the property and you could learn how to fish. It was a nice program for city kids to keep us busy with something productive during the summer, and my mother didnt have to drive us anywhere.

(4,054 posts)I like to look back and count my blessings for all the things I hated that are gone. Like party lines. And people smoking everywhere. I often tell young people that they can't imagine how much life used to stink. Then I say "And by 'stink' I don't mean life used to suck, I mean it literally smelled horrible. Women smelled like they dipped themselves in perfume, men slapped aftershave lotion on their faces, and everyone smoked everywhere! Restaurants were absolutely revolting!"

The older, kind of grumpy lady who owned and ran it lived in the connected apt in the back. She had one of those curved glass display cases full of candies for you to choose from...
