Phone calls at 10:30 are never good. I've certainly learned that in all of my 28 years. My family and I just got off of the phone with my aunt. This afternoon, while airing a semi-truck tire, the tire exploded and seriously injured my uncle. He's in intensive care right now, with the majority of his right hand side fractured, including his face. They're still undetermined if there's any actual bleeding in his brain, but we do know that he will have to undergo several reconstructive surgeries when he recovers enough.
We haven't told my grandmother (his mother) yet, as we don't want to disturb her while she's asleep and have her be up all night worrying. Knowing her, I'd imagine that she would jump on the first plane out of St. Louis to be with him. To tell the truth, I wouldn't blame her.
Just keep my uncle in your thoughts tonight. I hope that he won't need them.
Best wishes for your uncle, Hayabusa!

(13,661 posts)All good vibes to your uncle. Hopefully no internal bleeding or bleeding into his brain.
Let us know how he is when you can, OK?

(2,135 posts)My aunt called this morning and let us know that he was being taken in for surgery this morning so they can work on his arm and left fingers. The CT last night showed no bleeding into the brain, so that's a very good sign. His daughters have been notified and are on their way to the hospital.
We told my grandma this morning and she's taking it rather well. Of course she's worried and, yes, her first thought was to get on the first plane out of St. Louis, but we managed to convince her that that wouldn't be necessary.
Thanks for all the best wishes, everyone.

(2,135 posts)Aunt called again, saying that they had more surgeries to do, but the good news is that he is coherent, stable and actually consented himself to the surgeries by saying that they're to do whatever they have to do.
The bad news is that, even with surgeries on his left hand, the doctors are unsure whether or not he'll regain the use of his fingers on it.
It turns out that his grandson is the big hero in all of this, as he was with my uncle when the accident happened and he had the coolness under pressure enough to call 911.
I'd like to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers during this. I really appreciate it.

(23,272 posts)Just make sure he doesn't go for Micheal Jackson's last "nose" when he decides on what kind of reconstructive surgery he's getting - its not a good look.
