Why is it almost impossible to buy turkey broth or turkey stock?

Chicken broth and chicken stock, you can buy that by the friggin' barrel. But the best grocery store in Coeur d'Alene doesn't have even one drop of turkey broth or turkey stock. What's up with that?

in North America bakes a turkey on Thanksgiving, for some 90% of them (at least based on casual conversations over the years) never cook another turkey all year. So, first of all, they think fixing a turkey is very hard. It's not. You season it as you like, stuff it or not, put in the oven, and hang out for a few hours.

Back when I had a husband and two kids, I'd make turkey at least four or five other times in the year.

Sigh. Right now I'm in senior living, have a little kitchenette in my unit, meaning no oven, although many have full-sized ovens in them. There is a community kitchen with oven I might someday make use of.

I've been known to get a bunch of turkey stock/broth when I can and freeze it.

Most people don't cook turkey more than once a year. Manufactures can't make money of items that are so specialized.

It really isn't hard to simmer giblets and those are available now. Get some, freeze some. DYI turkey stock. Also, after the bird is cooked, carved, and leftovers put in the fridge, I always bundle the bones in foil and freeze so I can make turkey soup a few weeks later.

Every time I cook a turkey I save the carcass and make broth. I can it so it keeps for a year but if you freeze it, it will keep for 6 months.

But, if you want it other times of the year, good luck.
They had a standalone display in the meat department at the supermarket by us today.
Not sure how long it's been up, but probably not long.
Out of curiosity I went to the aisle where broths & stocks are shelves. No turkey broth there. Only that standalone display.

It was in the aisle with all the other boxed broths and stocks. Like the Professor said, I usually only see it during the holiday season.

Everything that might make broth has been diverted into a higher value product and there's simply nothing left?

Convenience, flexibility, cost, and flavor all better than boxed stock/broth.

I had been turned on to them by a relative some years ago and over time completely dumped buying stock in boxes.

I also recall a while back seeing an America's Test Kitchen episode where they taste tested popular supermarket stock/broth and said all of them were unacceptably bad but one flavor of one brand (Swanson's chicken, IIRC) and recommended BTB instead. It's very useful to have flexible on-demand amounts of multiple broth flavors always available (for me, chicken, beef, vegetable plus/minus turkey); and those small jars hardly take up any fridge/pantry space compared to boxes of stock.
