(14,108 posts)Ill be 80 next year, a retired nurse, and I work 5 hours daily five days a week in a high school kitchen and lunch line
purposely
for the exercise, because I know damn well I will only go to the gym the first two days after I enroll and then Ill make excuses. The cafeteria work is very physical, 2 miles of walking, fantastic lifting/cardio, arm stretches, knee bands, you name it, plus laughter, social interaction, singing and dancing with my fellow workers and the kids. If youre my age and have physical ailments, Im so very sorry, but if you need to stay in your best shape and go to bed happy at night, there are lots of ways of doing that.
And P.S. - They pay me.

(14,108 posts)plus running up mileage passing meds down the long halls, so I was afraid that I would gain weight and lose muscle after retirement. When I was asked if I could sub now and then in food service at the high school, I tried it, and now ten years later I have muscles in my arms and legs like never before. Its a major work out!
And I feel better than ever.

(506 posts)the great benefits of regular exercise!
Getting your blood moving is like an inner shower!
I'm heading for the gym right now and know I will continue to feel energetic and clear headed at 75.

(28,248 posts)...because of physical strength concerns (not strong enough to wear a heavy tool belt, carry a firehose, etc), nobody ever, EVER told a 5 foot, 100 lb woman that she couldn't go into nursing because she might have to logroll a 250 pound stroke patient all by herself.
My first job out of nursing school was on the adolescent unit of my university's hospital, which had been built in 1925 - long hall and high ceilings. Looked a lot like the set of St. Elsewhere. The patients had call bells, but there was no intercom, so anytime a patient rang, we'd have to go to them to see what they needed or wanted. We ran our asses off up and down those long halls.

Go, Goldie Hawn, go! At 74, the Hollywood icon is showing us all up in quarantine and proving that you don't have to go outside to get your sweat on! Goldie shared a video of herself jumping for joy on a small trampoline inside her home to the tune of Dua Lipa's "Physical." "My crazy @mindup mindful movement for today. Dance, jump and twirl like nobodys watching, and thanks @dualipa for the best addition to my trampoline playlist! #letsgetphysical," she captioned the fun post.
