space. How about you?
Seems reasonable, yes?

(36,875 posts)Our house is small, with two bedrooms, a dining room, and an "Arizona room" added in the back, along with the usual living room, kitchen, laundry/pantry, etc. The rooms are small-- it's a retirement home, all on one level. My wife and I sleep in the smaller bedroom, I use the master bedroom for an office, lab, and studio. She has her office in the AZ room and my workbench is in there too, along with her puzzle table and my drawing table. It has lots of windows and we often eat dinner in there too. We use the dining room as an ancillary work room because it already has a nice big table to stack things on.
At our age, stuff is only important if it helps us do things we enjoy. If a room or furniture gets little use we convert it for something else! I can honestly say we use every room in our house, everyday.

(39,737 posts)My parents used their large dining table often, since it was the only room where we could seat everyone comfortably. The interesting thing is that each of us kids grew up and pursued our dreams, eventually moving out of our parents' house. Most of us got married and we now have small families - one or two kids - and eventually some of us became grandparents ourselves. But none of the original nine siblings have big dining rooms with tables like our parents had. I think it must be a generational thing....
We try to get together once in a while, but none of my sibs has room to seat the entire family at one table. Those days are over. My sibs and their extended families are spread out all over the country anyway, it's hard to imagine getting everyone together at the same time for anything. That includes weddings and funerals too.

(194,182 posts)Ive never known anyone who actually uses their front room. Years ago we put our Christmas tree up in our front room just because we were never in there. Once. We put it up in our tv room/ den that was really one big room with the kitchen.
When we were looking at houses to buy 6 years ago, I had a running joke about always checking out the coat closet near the front door. Seems a terribly antiquated idea. Usually they weee just used as storage as we did everywhere we lived. Then in this one house I opened it up to find an electronic mainframe. This house was wired.
We actually use our coat closet for our everyday coats, shoes,
.and storage.
I havent rooms in my house I havent been in in months. The spare bedroom and the office which is just another bedroom really.

(9,717 posts)Where I am from, we call the area where the TV, as well as other things that the dwellers usually use every day as the 'living room', and the front room where the 'good' furniture and pictures are as the 'parlor'.
As kids, we were not allowed to play in the parlor because it had to be ready for guests. Now, we seldom had guests, but it was the norm around my house anyway. We did put the tree in that room (mainly because it was in the front and we had to show our 'Christmas spirit'), but other than Christmas and maybe Thanksgiving, we seldom used it.

(7,990 posts)All our coats, gloves, hats, boots and whatever were there. I can't imagine NOT using it.
We (3 kids) *did* add a door bell button to the closet. It rang in my brother's bedroom in the attic and gave us enough time to ditch the pot and try to air things out.

(23,572 posts)Our house has a room at the front which could be a 'formal'room or parlor or dining room or a combo of the two.
WHen we first moved here we had gatherings from time to time but it has become a sort of catch all, right by the front door. Behind it and through a pair of French doors is a long kitchen/tv room which we are in all the time.
One of these days maybe I will get the catchall out of the front room and its rightful furniture back into it.

(39,387 posts)But one of them is a whole set of fine china, Mikasa, and crystal drinking goblets. Back in the 80s when we got married, almost every couple had to have fine china and everyday china. I never use the fine china because it is not dishwasher safe. I think I used it for maybe 2 holiday dinners in over 30 years. Its really pretty, but what a waste of money! And people arent buying it, either.
My kitchen was tiny when we moved into this house. I had 2 and 1/2 feet of counter space on either side of the sink. We enclosed a breezeway and made that into our everyday dining room and enlarge the kitchen and got rid of the table and chairs in there since it was too cramped for me, my husband, and three big boys.
Happy Thanksgiving, Deb!
