Today I rolled 250,000 miles on the odometer of my beloved 4Runner!
Still running strong!
Happened just as I was pulling in to park at the office for my new apartment up in the mountains! The rest of the day was frantically stressful but by this afternoon, once I picked up the van, all was much better.
So hee haw and shoot howdy!!

(75,497 posts)Don't give it up, 2na! New cars are all junk with plastic gears & such nonsense.
This baby is all steel including the wheel rims. No rusty holes, it does need to get painted in the spring, but as old as that paint is, it's still shiny! I sold that BMW because this vehicle has far more value both in function and if I decide to sell it for whatever reason... like when I get too old to climb in anymore. The seat is about 8inches higher than my fanny so it's a climb-in situation, glad there are handles!

They use a heavy brine on the roads, bad for cars but with the hills and sections of road that never see the sun in winter, I'm glad they do that. Knowing that, I had "the undercoat" applied a couple months ago, protects it from dying a rapid rusty death.

(75,497 posts)Great you had it undercoated.
If able to, just plan shoppung trips ahead of time & avoid driving in salty weather.

(99,247 posts)And I noticed that there is a car wash in just about every little town so that will be part of the winter routine.
Didn't have to worry about that around jellystone, they don't use salt in or near the park but it you went over the divide to Idaho, it's brine but not as thick as they have it applied here.

(75,497 posts)My dad used to constantly preach this, so it was always 2nd nature to me.
I have an 05 Civic & daughter bought an 04 used.
I told her repeatedly to do the underwash every time the salt cleared off the streets.
Did she? Of course not & the 04, which I bought & gifted to gs, has some major rust underneath.
My 05 is still in great shape. 👍

(99,247 posts)One of my sisters had a new Accord back in the mid 80s, got it brand new, drove it till it dropped, got another one and drove it to the bitter end too. I don't know how many miles she got out of them but they were very used.

(1,012 posts)I always check my odometer to see how many miles I have and I always like to watch it turnover every 10,000 miles.
A couple of years ago, I took my Honda into the dealer for service and while filling out the paperwork I was asked how many miles it had. I answered "50,000." The technician said she'd have to check the odometer to make sure. When she turned the key the odometer read 50,000.0 miles. She said that's the first time she ever saw with a reading like that.

(99,247 posts)At 200K. It was a good day. I didn't have anything with me to do that today and I had a 90minute driveand then another two hours doing all the stuff I had to do today, so I decided to post it here so I wasn't celebrating alone.

Mine was cream colored... and I used it to camp and hike most of Colorado's 14K peaks.

(22,190 posts)It was the first model year 1984 where the short-body truck was retrofitted with a fiberglass cap and a full back seat bench.
I absolutely loved that little truck but drove it hard and long. The 2.4L engine (I think the 22R-E) was plenty good for rides across most of the country and lots of off-roads.
Not too much rust after about 10 years but it wasn't worth a new/old engine replacement. Had a much later model in the 1990s - just not as rugged.

(294 posts)I just hit 288,000 miles (about 463,500 km for our metric friends) on my 2007 VW Passat this afternoon.
I am really happy with this unit, We've been through some things together. I bought it on 2004 with 104K on it. I know I drove about 80K on dirt.
288K is quite a milestone! Congrats! I will probably see that in a couple years too.

(99,247 posts)Is a '92. I didn't like them when they first came out, I got to drive several the summer they came out with these as a river rafting shuttle driver. Years later I started liking them, I think I didn't like them at first because I kept whacking my knee on the steering column... I hate that. Now, this one feels like my old favorite pair of boots. Shifts like buttah.
Old Toyotas never die, they just get new drivers.

(10,208 posts)Mine's a pre-Tacoma '94 stick with about 150k - just a pup but no longer a daily driver, just a hauler or take me camping/snow rig. Our son has a '94 also but with that fabulous 22R 4-cyl. engine and no 4WD. Both PU's are in good shape and keepers.
I'd say good call on getting rid of the Beemer and here's to another 250k!

(99,247 posts)With a number of those older models, they might look like hell, or like they've been through hell, but they're still good running utility vehicles.

(22,400 posts)after seeing the mileage I asked "Is that 78 thousand or 178 thousand?" His reply floored me
"Oh heavens no, that's been turned over twice maybe 3 times, I put a lot of miles on this everyday!"
Doubt if Honest John's Used Car Lot would ever hire him.

(42,141 posts)Something is going to go wrong. Telepathy. Yep.
I have a collection of photographs from when the mechanic has come out with an amazed look on his/her face to say you got this in here just in time. Then they show me the parts when the car is on the lift. I take pictures.
This has happened so many times that it cant be coincidence.
One time the guy showed me the parts and he said he didnt think I would have gotten another 2 miles without a breakdown.
Another time I got some unexpected money in the mail. It was an odd amount, something like $664.25. As soon as I opened the envelope, I said this will cover my upcoming auto repair.
Sure enough, later that week something went wrong with the car and I had to take it in. When I picked it up, they started to give me the billing, and I said dont show melet me guess. Then I asked if the bill was $664.25 and the persons jaw dropped. He said there is no way you could know that because I only figured this up as you were walking in the door.

(99,247 posts)Happen to me too, though I don't take pictures.
Several years ago, before covid, I had a big repair bill on that Beemer and the day after I got the estimate I received an unexpected inheritance that was exactly what the bill came to, kind of inverted from your deal but a similar thing.
I have been 'lucky' with a number of vehicles, I guess the universe doesn't want me to be without transportation!
