Dec 9th, the first night of the river cyclone that hit here in western Washington State, Kitty Boy, the Best Boy ever, disappeared. We live in a rural area and it was flooded everywhere. Everyone reminded me that he's a smart and savvy cat. I told them that being smart doesn't matter if you're 11 pounds and could be washed away in a torrent of water. I also told them that if he was able, he would crawl through broken glass and barbed wire to get back here.
I grieved and cried and cussed every day. I couldn't bare to put any of his things away. Especially his outdoor, custom insulated igloo that's on our elevated porch. If and when he came home, the igloo would let him know he was really home.
HAPPY AMAZING NEW YEAR'S EVE FOR ME!! When I got up and wandered to my living room today and looked out, there was looking out the igloo at me! He was gone 3 weeks. I thanked all my family and friends who sent out the vibes for him and I especially thank the Universe for listening!
Happy Extra Special New Year to you all DU!

(214 posts)I was in a flood in Missouri early 1980s and a relatives cat jumped offf the porch and was swept out of sight. He came back a few days later. Brought our spirits up after all the damage that happened. I have never gotten over the sound of that water.

(16,140 posts)It was good that his return brought all your spirits up! Now I know how that feels.

(16,140 posts)He ate 4 times in an hour and 1/2. His vertabrea and hips are showing, his coat looks good and his eyes are clear. I think he might have been taken in by some kind person at some point and kept inside because he lost the winter coat and his beans are softer than they've ever been.

(533 posts)Cats are incredible. I had one disappear for several months and had given up on him. I grieved for him and then one day when it was pouring rain my hubby said sissy is at the door wanting in and without looking at the door I said no, shes not shes in the chair. I looked and screamed ITS MURFF HES BACK . Im pretty sure he was at one of the neighbors houses that we didnt associate with much (long story) and finally managed to escape. He was healthy and well fed, just wanted HOME.

(3,210 posts)Tears of joy at the end. We have four cats and I can't imagine going through 3 weeks with one of them missing. We live in Auburn, and at one point we had a stand by to evacuate order. Packed a few things into the van, got our petcarriers down, loaded cat food and kitty litter. I wasn't going anywhere with out my furbabies.
I'm Glad Best Boy is safely home, and hope all else is right with you.
Faux pas
(16,140 posts)Yikes! That would be scary for sure! At least your babies were safe and ready to go with you, whew!
We live in Hoquiam with the river just across the 2 lane country road. The river doesn't flood (knock wood) where we are but, we are backed up against the foothills I'm sure that that contributes to the back area flooding. That night the front and back were lakes and the driveway was a river. I'm sure Kitty Boy was having sensory overload between all that and the way the clouds were so low the cars and trucks zooming (like idiots!) down the road made it sound like they were driving right through the yard. I don't blame him for trying to get away from that.

(2,330 posts)Cats are a strange breed. Had a couple growing up and Keecot we acquired in Spainhe was a pure white tom with a green eye and a blue eye. While this particular combo usually means the cat is deaf there wasnt any evidence that he was actually deaf.
What he was was a bad ass. He once limped home with a deep gash in his side and his guts poking out. The vet assured us that hed do what he could to save him but wasnt giving us odds. He quickly healed.
When we went off on one of our annual, multi week trips to my parents home town, Keecot just disappeared (yes, we let our cat wander at nightmy only defense is that it was the early 60s and that was semi-normal then). We waited for him for 3 extra days and he finally showed up.
So glad that your baby came back.

(19,663 posts)So happy for you! 5 years ago I was cat sitting my daughters cat and he fell out of my bedroom window when the screen dropped out! I frantically searched for him for 2 days - calling, leaving food out and posting flyers. Then my next door neighbor came over and said that the cat was on his back deck! I was so happy that he came back and surprised that he knew where to return to since he didnt live with me. Cats are so wonderful! 😽
