who moved out of the country or for other reasons couldn't care for them.

My favorite was also the crankiest. He was indoor/outdoor and every night at 4am, lept onto my chest, dug his claws into me, and demanded to be let outside (I complied). When I got up a few hours later, he'd be waiting for me just outside the back door, sometimes gifting me with some small animal he'd "captured" that had obviously already been dead when he found it.

That is exactly why our female tuxie sleeps in the basement (in a nice heated bed.) She is an early riser if left out and about in the house, and as soon as it is the least bit light out, she is on the dresser tops knocking things onto the floor. Not being a super neat minimalist, I tend to leave her plenty of targets.
