Once this Orchestra was preparing to play Beethoven's 9th.

There is a section in the 9th where the base violins sit idle for something like 20 minutes. These players were tired of doing nothing and decided to do something about it. They started talking about it and decided to sneak off stage and head over to the bar across the street and take in a few.

After a taking in a few one of the players said, " hey we better get back." Another violinist responded, "don't worry about it before we started tonight I tied up some of the pages of the conductor's score and in the confusion we can sneak back on stage.

When bass violinists returned to the stage the 1st chair violinist took note of their return and the ensuing confusion. This first chair said to the 2nd chair, "we are in trouble." The second chair said, "why?"

She responded, "well, it's the bottom of the 9th, the bases are loaded, and the score is tied."
