and sung along, of course, not just in tourist areas like Temple Bar but in local pubs as well. There's a connection between Ireland and Appalachia, so many Irish and Scots settlers who brought their music with them.

9. It's a decades old tradition that Country Roads is played at the end of successful WVU sports competitions.

At the West Virginia women's NCAA tournament basketball game on Saturday, the NCAA insisted that Country Roads could not be played after the game, in the name of maintaining a "neutral site".

So, the 14,000 in the Coliseum simply sang it a cappella. It was glorious!


Years ago, when the WVU Alumni Band made several concert tours of Europe, the crowds would always sing along with Country Roads.
