The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOne of the triplets was just accepted to medical school.
Time flies, and the triplets who were babies when I joined DU are now 25 years old and college graduates.
The eldest has wanted to go to medical school for years. He's spent the two years since college graduation working as a tech in a local ER, and loves the job. He's planning to go into emergency medicine, a specialty where doctors are always needed.
This kid literally cried when he received the acceptance. He'll be a great doctor with a compassionate bedside manner.
I am so damned proud of him.
A shout-out to the other triplets. The second kid is a civil engineer; the youngest and girl is working towards her MBA and will graduate in August.

I hope they have a great campus visit!

I hope that your triplets do as well. It's so wonderful to see them achieve success in the world, though I worry about what they'll face in the future because of drumpf's destruction. It's so unfair to this generation.
You're lucky that they live down the street from them. I expect that you see quite a lot of your grandchildren.

Younger one has business trips to both Canada outside Toronto and DC at Bloombergs office. She said if they lived near DC she would put in to work there, really liked the people who work there. But right now she loves working for the Canadians.

(13,299 posts)Working as teenagers because I was a poor single mom making very little and ex took off gave me nothing. I told kids I can afford basics but if you want more you have to work. Older one wanted a car and got job at copy place, was manager there by 17 and had a cute white convertible. Little one worked at clothing store because she didnt care to drive wanted good wardrobe. She got it.
They use to whine a bit jealous of their friends whose parents just gave them money until they got older and said they realize they have gone further in their careers than their friends because they have motivation and good work ethics.
But that said I have to laugh because both of them are spoiling my grandchildren and only one is motivated to work.
I remarried when youngest was 18 and we are doing ok financially. Makes me wonder if I had spoiled them would they have turned out the same? They were both determined never to be like their mom financially.

(2,336 posts)I would have a long talk with them about the near monopoly of Humongous Corporations that have taken control of the entire field of medicine, medical insurance, and pharmaceuticals, and now indirectly/directly controlling Doctors......
Two of my relatives, both specialists, retired early 15 years ago.......They both stated they were tired of being forced to practice Corporate Policy instead of medicine.........

(2,336 posts)the current medical industrial complex as patients...............
It is un-fathomable what has take place since 2016, and even worse what has happened with price increases and gouging since November, after the elections......The Medical providers, esp hospitals, started immediately, with Medical Insurances going up a great deal with deductibles going up, and the Pharmaceutical companies are running wild again.......
The worse thing I am seeing, is the lack of quality, caring care providers at all levels.....Doctors, nurses, techs, etc etc etc. The seasoned Nurses and Doctors are bailing out big time around here, even worse than after Covid.......
With all that is being created by these corrupt politicians, esp at the Fed Level, I am constantly wondering if these politicians that are causing all of this crap, have children or grand children, or is it that They.Just.Don't.Care......I fear the later.....

(29,453 posts)And how fortunate that all 3 had separate interests so they were not competing for the same achievements.
Were they a surprise from Mother Nature or assisted fertility triplets? Please don't answer if my pediatric nurse self is being too nosy.
The pediatric practice from which I retired had 2 sets of triplet patients, and whenever either of the moms would come in with their stretch limo strollers when the kids were little, a hush would fall over the waiting room, and you could hear the moms of singletons thinking, "Oohhh, I guess my life is not as busy as I'm always complaining that it is."
We also has one set of quads - 2 boys, 2 girls. Both parent worked, and they had 2 nannies = one for the boys and one for the girls.
greatauntoftriplets
(179,076 posts)There was a time when they were very young that all three wanted to be chefs because that's what their father is. None followed through with that, but are impressive cooks from an early age.
Triplets still get a lot of interest when, for example, they're being walked down the street in their stretch limos. As you say, they're a lot of work because you have to do everything three times. My niece used her breast pump while driving to try and get enough milk for them.
I can't even imagine what having quads is like. They needed two nannies!

If he likes reading, I hope he reads The Citadel someday. It is a beloved classic and imo a must read for young medical professionals and scientists generally.
These are such corrupt times. I have rarely come across doctors I didnt like. It is a profession (like science) which generally consists of people I respect and trust. The training helps instill a reality based worldview.
Hospital admins are another matter.
I rather like this one doctor, whose columns are pretty decent:
https://www.claytondalton.com/
Dr. Dalton is a physician-writer which I think is pretty cool.
I am myself trying to get back on track in science after a horribly extended break (a shitty job that was life destroying in 2011, covid, the death of someone I was very close to and some other really bad stuff local to me).
And experimenting with writing (which I have very mixed feelings about - which is why I end up deleting many of my posts off and on in a revulsion of feeling about revealing so much about myself online). I have complicated feelings about whether to only be someone who talks about their own field in the main and only posts other peoples views that closely match mine rather than write myself.
I know I will never write under my own name. But I am in the middle of a conflict and it comes down to whether honest human writing can help or not. I am a bit suspicious of concepts like telling ones story. Sounds a bit dubious and sketchy imo. But Dr.Dalton, Yasha Levine, Ed Zitron, Chris Ketcham, Evgenia Kovda, Marina Bolotnikova and Adam Becker write unaffectedly and it isnt an exercise in narcissism.
Hamilton Nolan had a piece years ago called Journalism is not narcissism. And I agreed mostly and like Nolan. So I have not decided yet. I suspect I will revert to my basic nature and end up deleting all my writing. Not as a reputation curating person. But as someone to whom sharing doesnt come easily and who resents having been forced into it by a creepy, shitty loathsome workplace. I have fewer mixed feelings about writing exclusively about my hatred for my last workplace. There it feels natural.
But then I just sound embittered and disgruntled - both of which I am. But it comes down to whether it helps in my conflict with them. What sets my experience apart at least some from many is I was an early inductee into the creepy and repellant Panopticon being built and am writing to push back against it.
It all comes down to establishing conflict lines as I prepare to re-enter research if that is even possible. My last workplace made me give up. But when I look at the world today and how negative an influence Google, Facebook etc (all heavy influences on that creepy hell) have been on the world, I reject their worldview with the disdain it deserves. I do question some archaic views in science that make it less accessible to anyone but pis and temps. Looking at the diverse collection of creeps who catered to Epstein it doesnt feel like a subset of these superstars of science are nice or sane unlike the average scientist (elite like my real mentor or non elite like me). And those creeps seem to be the gate-keepers like my disgusting, cultish and somewhat stupid former workplace.
This is an instance of politics getting entwined with science, medicine and reality and so maybe it is worthwhile? I just dont think it is a very good thing when scientists or physicians are influencer adjacent. But the people I follow are not influencers. They are not shilling any products or posting on social media. Nor are they just contributing generic, canned stuff. Which I suppose is what it comes down to. What is the point if it is just more blandly insipid or spectacular, controversial and angering froth? Those are stylistic differences not substantial ones. That way I like Lucien Greaves - he writes to represent the caustic who have a function.
I will only ever write on DU which I do see as closer to collaborative teamwork which gets back to a comfort zone as that is much of science. I write here as you are all nice people and Dave, elad and MIRT make this very different from a hideous Zuckerberg owned hell. Otoh then I dont want to grate on other DUers, while still writing freely if I do write. And my internal voice is perhaps a bit caustic and vinegary and one never wants to hurt peoples feelings unless they are all the public figures I hate and my last workplace. Like that is a shitty move to use an experience to invalidate other peoples views. That is the type of person who correctly annoys everyone. Of course I stay squarely in the average person side (which is why I stay anon). I have to think about it more. I switch between thinking of individual DUers and abstract concepts. As I have a picture of most DUers. I suppose it is how it fits into DU, but not electoral politics at all directly, but more what being an American or in my case an Indian who was trained in America means politically.
I have known both the healthy (my main lab) and the diseased (my last workplace and stuff I see here saw there. Oh fuck off auto wrong) versions of community or cooperation. A cult that hates nuclear families, largely solitary childfree catladies
is not the opposite of self absorbed solipsism and Thatcherite atomisation.
But the triplet is doing us all a favor. We need more doctors and scientists and he sounds like a decent kid. I am happy for you. You have changed your icon! You used to have what I assumed was a photo of you.
I shall check back. I have to go get back on track today

(179,076 posts)I recall reading it years ago, and was moved by it. Had no idea of its inspiration by the NHS until I looked it up today to refresh my memory.
In the last 10 - 11 years, I've seen too much of the healthcare industry from the inside (as a patient, not a professional) to have any faith in its current direction. Backlash against the status quo has to occur at some point. Maybe my great-nephew will be part of the backlash. He's a very decent kid. Only someone with a sense of decency would have cried the way he did after learning about his acceptance.
I'll recommend the writers you've cited so if he gets time in between reading medical tomes he can check those out.
BTW, I remember you under your old username in the moderator hot tub. Hope things are generally going well for you.

(179,076 posts)This is a good kid who wants to help people. He originally wanted to be a neurologist to help find a cure for dementia and Alzheimer's. Since spending the last two years working in an ER, he's chosen to go in that direction because it's a more hands-on calling where he feels he can make a greater difference.
Thanks for all your suggestions. Veteran moderators like you helped me catch on more quickly to the pace and actions in the mod hot tub. I've long appreciated that help.
