I use "Do Not Disturb" between 9:00 PM and 9:00 AM, so any calls go straight to voicemail, which I generally don't access anyway , and I don't use any other phone functions in bed. At night, it's just a face-down clock on my nightstand.

I dislike my phone, but I'll be damned if I'll buy a separate alarm clock when I paid so much for the freakin' phone!

because I'd get at least one call a day from him or his carers and there was always a problem I had to deal with. I never got out of the habit even after he passed away, and especially now that I've ditched my landline the phone is near me all the time.

I used to have my phone in bed with me when my husband was in a nursing home. I’ve heard that is not healthy. I have not seen the results of studies on cell phones causing cancer and other health problems.

We used to go to bed, and fall right off to sleep. Wake up in the middle of the night with the TV still on. Fumble around in the dark looking for the remote, and end up being wide awake without a good night of sleep.

I'll use it to check the time, weather, news and whatnot...Before retiring one of my jobs was at a good sized hospital in the computer operations department where we monitored over a dozen screens with info on the hospital computers and also several remote clinics related to the hospital and their functions, backups, faxes and other stuff. I like keeping informed...just me...

Apple has that setting, don't know if android does.

Do not disturb has the side effect of no longer showing new message dots on the app icon, so you might miss some, because that notification is silenced too.

I use DND as well as mute to prevent interruptions at all sorts of times.

However, I have an extension to my landline next to my bed. I turn the ring OFF when I care to do so. Same goes for the old answering machine in the kitchen.

I do not like ringing phones at night when I am in bed asleep.

I wear a smart watch when I sleep so I can track my sleep and how much deep sleep I get. I used to keep my phone on when I slept but too often I'd get a text or email from a company or someone late at night which would cause my smart watch to vibrate waking me up. I've never had a text or email that needed an immediate response so I turn my watch off and if someone needs to call me late at night they can call me on my landline.

If you have a landline phone nearby you probably don't need your cellphone, but if you don't have a landline any more (I ditched it some years ago when I realized that it had become just a conduit for telemarketers), the cellphone is the only way you can get help if you need it, especially if you live alone. Fire? Burglar breaking in? Sudden illness? How are you going to get to the cellphone you left downstairs in the living room to call the fire department if your house is on fire and your room is full of smoke? Or, are you going to ask the burglar in your living room to hold off for a minute while you get the cellphone off the coffee table and call the police? Having a heart attack and can't even breathe let alone get out of bed, walk down the steps in the dark, find the phone and call an ambulance? Seems kind of insane to me not to keep the phone in the bedroom if it's the only one you have.

And ABC Always Be Charging. From my laptop at work, plug in in the car, the chair I’m sitting in right now (electric recliner with a USB port).

My phone doesn’t hold a charge very well but I like the size. I keep the ringer off - way too many loan calls.

Just got in the habit of always having it nearby.
