Scientists make sourdough bread using yeast found inside a frozen mummy

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/oetzi-the-iceman-yeast-mummy-sourdough-bread/

Yeast has been growing in the guts of a frozen mummy called Oetzi the Iceman for thousands of years, scientists have discovered, telling AFP they used it to make a sourdough bread.

More than 5,300 years ago — before the Egyptian pyramids were built — Oetzi was strolling through the Alps on the border of Austria and Italy when he was killed by an arrow in the back.

He remained frozen in the ice until two German hikers stumbled across his mummified remains in 1991 in the northern Italian region of South Tyrol.

Since then, his stunningly well-preserved remains have been kept at the same temperature — minus six degrees Celsius — as his icy tomb.

Some interesting info on Ötzi the Iceman...

Age and Appearance: He was roughly 45 years old when he died, stood about 5 feet 5 inches (160 cm) tall, and weighed around 110-140 pounds. He had dark hair, brown eyes, and suffered from various ailments including joint pain, tooth decay, and intestinal parasites.

Tattoos: His skin is marked with 61 distinct tattoos (mostly lines and crosses) across his body, which experts believe may have served a therapeutic purpose similar to early acupuncture.

The Last Meal: Stomach analysis shows he had a rich, heavy meal consisting of ibex meat, red deer meat, fat, and einkorn wheat roughly an hour before he died.

However, I think I'll put off the sourdough and wait until I can try a beer made from Ötzi yeast.
