We have had dogs all my life. When we leave the house and don't want the dogs to roam about, we put up doggie gates that keep them in the kitchen and pantries, three rooms. They have plenty of areas to walk around. I've had family members I'd rather put in a cage than my dogs.

ours have run of the house and one part of yard in summer but I have seen the kennel situation work just fine for dogs that are trained/used to it. and being trained to them can really help if there is a health situation where they NEED to be confined to a small area.
