Anything else is unnecessarily fancying it up.

(16,230 posts)and Campbell's cream of mushroom soup.
I'm not sure if I'm familiar with Durkee so I'm not sure if that's right or not, but it has to be real onion rings. The big thick batter coated onion rings, not those dried things in a can. Like these: http://www.instructables.com/image/FLF3PATGKS0UZQP

(12,132 posts)and I am a veteran of years and years of Baptist pot-luck suppers!
I might try it though just because it's likely to upset the Baptists.

(16,230 posts)I never knew it any different. We always had it that way for Thanksgiving. It's always a disappointment to me when someone makes it with the dry things.
The rings absorb the soup and get soft and very tasty. You can cut them with the spoon as you're serving it.
When I was little, they had to keep an eye on me so I didn't take all of the rings and leave beans for everyone else.

(12,132 posts)they get crunchy on top! I love it!
My wife had to start dipping into the casserole dish for me to leave some for the others...

(47,675 posts)... only the original recipe which called for French-cut beans. The cut ones don't, well, cut it.
And yes, I still make it from time to time. Campbell's prints the recipe in the Sunday coupon inserts.

(8,692 posts)Unfortunately, my inlaws screw it up every year so I don't get any until after the holidays when I make it for myself. They put sauteed onions and almonds in it- and no french fried onions. Who does that? blech.

(23,272 posts)Not the biggest favorite on the table (turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes are clear winners) but it has its fair share of devotees in this house. Wouldn't be T-Day without a spoonful on the plate!

(42,290 posts)Green bean casserole.... it's practically unknown in Canada. (I wouldn't even know where to find canned fried onions). Maybe because we have a different Thanksgiving date.
But SO MANY Americans say that this is as much of a tradition as turkey.
I don't get it.

(4,833 posts)There is nothing, nothing, in that dish that I would eat by itself.
And yet, combined, and after having consumed sufficient quantities of wine before and with dinner, it's not bad at all with turkey and typical US Thanksgiving Day fare.
I've had it enough times, over a sufficient number of years, that it really isn't Thanksgiving Dinner without at least a serving spoonful of the stuff. Kind of like black eyed peas (which I truly dislike) at New Years.

(8,093 posts)It will never be off the holiday menu.
I think I have only had it once - it wasn't in my family's tradition so I had it once at a friends house. I don't like soggy bread products so the onion ring topping kind of grosses me out, but I could eat it if it was the only side dish or something.
