The idea that more choice is better is baked into Western culture, but research shows that having more options can make people anxious, indecisive and, paradoxically, less happy with what they pick, said Barry Schwartz, an emeritus psychology professor at Swarthmore University and author of The Paradox of Choice.
There have been hundreds of studies showing that there can be too much of a good thing, Schwartz said.

The brain doesnt like making decisions
Daniel Willingham, a psychology professor and neuroscience researcher at the University of Virginia, said the phenomenon occurs because the brain is designed to save people from having to think.
Problem-solving requires more energy than relying on memory, a fact that has roots in evolutionary survival mode, Willingham said. When faced with a goal, whether it be an immediate need like responding to a threat or something longer term like finding shelter, the mind first searches for whats worked before. The problem-solving part of the brain only kicks in afterward.
Another way to put it is that if youre thinking, things are not going well, he said.
Instead of being liberated by all this choice, youre paralyzed, he said. You can do anything, and you cant figure out which of those many things to do.

****does anyone else stress out when faced with way too many choices such as when deciding on an insurance plan, which car to buy, which cell phone plan should I get, etc. its overwhelming sometimes the vast aisles of grocery items we have to choose from, too.

Interesting concept. Seems counterintuitive.
Is this why some people find authoritarians appealing?

(2,672 posts)When Biden was in, I felt relieved (mostly) and didn't worry as much every day---I trusted him. With Trump, whenever he makes a decision, I immediately start trying to figure out how he is going to personally benefit from it and what can be done to stop him. So I guess it goes both ways---as long as you trust the people in power, you should have to think/worry less about what they're doing. Of course, most of us here have ZERO trust in the current regime and think about him and what he is doing a lot. Obama and Biden gave me a mental break.....but the evil forces never stopped working behind the scenes, unfortunately.

(53 posts)My holier-than-thou Xtian cousin insisted it was a gift, not a curse. Unless you were female. Then it was you being uppity and trying to seduce any dick around.
My cousin accurately noticed the many choices that became burdens--but somehow it was always womens' fault. Of course, not god's fault.
His god was men's invention, so could not be held to account by mere women.
Despite the fact that if his wife had not consented (I assume) to become pregnant three times, he would have NO children.
Funny how that works, yes? You hate the people who make it possible to have heirs.
