Story update.

My husband gave me a great idea about the dilemma I am having about my book heroin. “She is so independent and free-spirited. Why don’t you make her non-human? That way the hero has a reason to be human compared to her?”
Great idea, but I don’t want to do a same old, same old Vampire book like he also suggested. You see, I based my hero on him (He has yet to put two and two together yet). I wanted the heroin to be what I think he deserves. I don’t think he deserves a Vampire. But what other mythical creature could work?
Writher’s dilemma! This started as a simple story and now…
Any creature ideas out there?

All I can say is, please make her intelligent.

As for creature ideas, I've always been enamored at the idea of Medusa(Gorgon, Medusa was beautiful before being cursed. I tend to think that she may still be beautiful to the point that her effect is petrification) falling for a scholar.
Someone who can't actually look at her...

Sadly, that would be more of a short story, and they would more likely be a great supporting character/side story to a main story line.

If you however are basing the hero on your husband, you have to make an honest assessment on your relationship patterns, his virtues, and then yours. As most books are semi-biographical any way, I guess I can see how that would go. I don't know you well enough to give much more specific help.

However, if you can give me some of your heritage I might be able to dredge something up.

There are a variety of things she can be. Let's go alphabetical:
Alien
Banshee - Or a descendant of the Sidhe
Changeling - Or a shape shifter
Dragon - Which can shift forms but that is overdone so use Daeva
Elf - Just because I can't think of anything else "E"
Fairy - But I don't want a Sookie, so go for a Fury, one of three sisters.
Golem - If you remember Pygmalion, Galatea was the statue that turned human. Basically she was a glorified version of a Golem. You can probably even make a drama of her being created by an artist, but falls for someone else.
Harpy
Ibong Adarna - Or Adarna Bird, a creature that can lull someone to sleep through song.
Jan - A version of a Genie
Kelpie - I don't want to even mention the Kitsune which is a Fox spirit.
Lamia - Half woman, half serpent... Sadly eats kids, so I don't know about that.
Medusa - Gorgon as mentioned, I still tend to think she is so beautiful it leaves people unable to move.
Nymph - But that is over used and more for a supporting character. Might be interesting to make one the main, just to be contrary.
Oracle - Just a pre-cog.
Phoenix - I am not sure if they are over done, but I like the idea of an immortal woman who dies and is reborn in flame over and over again with limited memories of the past. Or, with full memories of the past but has to relive child-hood over and over again. Much better than a Pixie.
Quanlier - Close relation to a Lycanthrope, or just a regular animathrope. Some person that changes in to an animal or half animal form.
Reaper - An incarnation of Death.
Selkie - Yes, I am not going to say Succubus... Oh wait, I just did.
Treant - A tree person, or a plant person. Either connected to a heart tree, that when chopped down, they die.
Undine - I love Undines, water spirits.
Valkyrie - Yes, some other V rather than what is expected.
X ??? - Some random carp that you can come up with.
Yokai - Basically just some sort of demon, but Japanese.
Zombie - Damn, can't think of anything else that starts with a Z.

5. A Phoenix?

Now that has me interested!!! I have not read any book where the phoenix is the hero.

6. It has possibilities

Though to me, mostly tragic.

Like I mentioned in the description, it would most likely be some person who would be immortal.

They can, either grow old or stay at a particular age.
Each time they die, they are reborn in a flame...

Then, dependent on how you want to do the renewal, either you make it so that they lose all their memories, and return back to their bodies, retain their memories but become a child again. I think that might be interesting actually. Maybe even a combination of both...
Where if she gets killed, she loses her memories for the past month, and has to remind herself what happened, or even worse, lose their memories of something important. There are definitely a lot of ways that you can play around with that actually.
Phoenix is also equivalent in power to a Dragon in some stories.

As you can see, I am partial to my Medusa idea, but again, that to me is a very short story. Unless the scholar is blind and reads in Braille.
I also like the Golem idea, where an artist brings to life a beautiful woman, who doesn't want him and finds some body else.

7. They're not mythical, but a basic phsycopath can made a damn good villan

They are a classic! The villain in mine is a little off. The Lady fair is the one that is going to be the Mythical Creature.
