First I read where the movie is done really well.
But second, I appreciate that Spielberg casted appropriately for the role of Mary Todd Lincoln instead of fitting her in a way that some 30-something Rom-Com starlet could play the part.
There are so few quality roles for actresses after that turn 40 and a lessor actor would have went with some 'current big name' to play the part instead of who could fit the part the best. Mary was actually 2 years older than Lincoln and almost 55 when she became first lady.
I think Sally Field was a good choice for the part. Good job Spielberg!

(41,991 posts)It's funny; she still seemed like Sally Field to me. That's harder for her to get away from than it is for Lewis, who's just ridiculously good, or Tommy Lee Jones, who might actually steal the thing a little, but she fits that role like a glove--little, forceful, crazy from strain and grief or just a little crazy in general, a good foil for Lewis. There's a scene (no real spoilers here) where she essentially backs down a room full of Congressmen where she looks for all the world like the personification of "mad as a wet hen". Someone more glamorous, less human, even among the "women of a certain age" in Hollywood could not have done half so well, imo.
Go see it and tell me what you think. It's well worth the effort and $$.
