Is there an ecard for this? The company that raises your rates 2 years in a row when you've had no claims at all... but you see their dimwit on television way too much so you know where your money is going.
Do you break up over the phone or let your new insurer tell them?

(37,648 posts)If it's Progressive, though, aren't they an agent for a variety of insurers? It's not an ins. co. itself, is it?

(34,658 posts)I called them and told them that I was not accepting the raise in rates and that I would find another insurer unless they cancelled the increase. They said ok.

(34,658 posts)I have a few weeks till this policy renews/expires so I am putting out calls for quotes on the same coverage.
Progressive has a huge share of the market, but when you see that much television advertising you know you are paying for it.

(34,108 posts)but I have State Farm. Another friend has car insurance with Farm Bureau and is satisfied with their rates (you don't have to be a farmer or whatever).

(37,648 posts)I get a discount for being a long term customer, and a discount for having my homeowner's with them, too. It's not cheap, but it's hard for me to get a lower rate just for auto elsewhere.

(34,136 posts)We'd had no claims, were safe drivers, and Progressive kept upping our rates. I got an offer from my bank for discounted rates through Hartford - nearly $400 less a year.
I called the Progressive agent, told them I was changing and asked about a prorated refund. She told me I would get one, then asked how much I was paying Hartford. When I told her, she was shocked.
Then when we joined AARP, their Hartford insurance was $350 LESS than the bank's Hartford so I switched to that one. We're paying less than half of what Progressive was charging for more insurance coverage.

(55,011 posts)going to $40 less per 6 months. Never had a problem with them, but know they can be pricy to start with. My family is on 4 generations with them for auto ins.
Progressive sucks from my one experience trying to settle a claim with them (somebody with them hit and killed a calf) took almost 6 months for a $500 claim. dozens of phone calls and e-mails. i was not impressed.

(34,658 posts)and the local agent has been trying to get me for a long time. So I will call them first.
Its amazing when they keep raising your rates and can't even think up a reason for it - and don't act the least bit concerned when you tell them they are going to lose your business.

(10,565 posts)This was 5-10 years ago (I think when Progressive was first starting to advertise a lot) --
We'd been w/ GEICO for a long time, but decided to rate-shop and switched to Progressive because they offered a really good rate. One year later when the new bill showed up, the rate had gone up a LOT. We bailed from Progressive and went back to GEICO. Even though we'd been gone from them for a year, they continued to give us the rate for long-term customers. They've been awesome through several claims.
Most recently, a couple of weeks back we needed to have a cracked windshield repaired. I'd put off dealing with it until a couple of days before we were to leave for a long Thanksgiving road trip. Called GEICO, and the service rep on the phone was SOOOOO helpful. She checked with the local place on their list that does mobile repairs that GEICO uses most often (and who'd repaired our windshield last time), but they were booked until a couple of days after we were due to leave on our trip. She checked (all of this she checked online or on another phone line while she had me on the phone) with another place, but it turned out that one was 30-40 minutes away from my house. I got out the local Yellow Pages, gave her names of some ones in our town that advertised mobile repairs. The mobile repairs were booked for the next few days. She then checked w/ another local place, which said I could bring the car in the next morning for the replacement. The GEICO rep then patched me in for a 3-way call w/ that place so they could give me directions to their place and confirm the appointment. She gave the repair place all the info they needed that GEICO would cover the replacement.
I must have been on the phone w/ the very friendly GEICO rep for at least 15 minutes while all this shopping around for a place that could do the repair promptly transpired.
All I had to do was drop of the car the next day - the repair was done 1 1/2 hours later, I paid the $100 deductible and we were all set! It was so easy.

(13,985 posts)Esurance was $75 / month less than what 21Century was charging me. Same benefits too.
When I called to tell them that I'm not going to renew, they didn't like it a bit. But screw them, they raised my premium $25/month more for no reason.
I'm so happy I got rid of em.

(34,658 posts)I think Esurance and Progressive are the two biggest auto insurers in the country.
When there's an accident- I think you can have a good or a bad experience with any company. Its anecdotal. If they raise your rate after an accident, you suck it up. But if they do it every year and they don't have a reason, you say no. Hell, your car is getting older, it should be cheaper to insure, not more expensive.

(23,241 posts)They GOT the message! Their CEO also got the nastiest letter I have ever written in my life, explaining what an incompetent and greedy organization they were, and how EFFin' glad I was not to be their customer any longer.

(34,658 posts)More than 20 years ago an AllState agent told me that if I dropped my insurance altogether, nobody would ever insure me again. I was gullible enough to believe this. So even during two years when I did not own a car and was not driving anybody else's car I was paying for liability insurance. Finally I learned that there was no reason to do this if I was never driving - you can get insurance by the day if you are renting a vehicle. And you will not be uninsurable after that.
So I found the district manager for AllState and told him how my agent had convinced me to keep paying for insurance that I wasn't using and didn't need by lying to me and trying to tell me nobody would insure me if I dropped it. They refunded me for everything I had paid that I didn't need and I never went back to them.
I don't know if it was just a crappy agent or the company, but one bad experience is enough.
