I think I broke my fucking toe.

I've stubbed my toe before without more than the sting after the initial hit. But this time it started swelling and throbbing painfully. That's never happened before.

Any tests out there to be sure it's a break? If it is, does that mean I have to hold back on my exercise regime?

It is responding to ice. The swelling went down quickly. I can bend it, but my daughter played an athletic sport and I know that kids have been known to play with broken bones, so movement isn't a strong indication.

I have seen kids with broken tows move them all day long.
Movement is also an indication of swelling. But ice is helping? Don't leave it on to long! Some new studies say it can increase swelling. Have you taken asprin yet?

It will be hurting soon. If it stays off color and do not hurt, you may want to see a doctor.

Any purple lines appearing?

If the is IS helping and if there are lines, those lines should be decreasing. If they are increasing, get the ice off.

Stubbed it on Stretch Armstrong. The ER Doctors did absolutely nothing for it other than to tell me to take aspirin for the pain. And I think ice the first 24 hours, then heat. It was my middle toe and it swelled to the size of my big toe and turned black, but it healed without orthopedic intervention. I did have to wear sandals the first day or two, though.

... to have a one-line bit part as "The Doctor" in a Charles Bukowski play.
.
In the proud footsteps of Bukowski, I decided to take my role over the top. I was supposed
to shake hands with another character. On the way to the party, I decided to stop at a drug
store and get a pair of latex examination gloves -- I planned to look at them after shaking his
hand, shaking them off, and apologizing.
.
(heavenly chorus here)
.
This was the day I was introduced to finger cots. JUST like condoms, only tiny enough to fit
snugly over your finger if you had to administer a suppository or something. The drugstore
sold them separately at about a dime apiece. I got 5 -- thinking I would do all my fingers on
one hand.
.
The drug store was busy. When I got to the register, I threw these itsy-bitsy little condoms
down on the counter (the line stretched to my right and the people waiting could see that
counter). The teenaged clerk behind the counter just STARED at the finger cots.
.
Then she looked at me.
.
Then she looked at the finger cots.
.
Then she looked at me.
.
This went on for a few more times before I anxiously and (faux-)angrily said, "Would you
hurry UP, please? I've got a hot date tonight!!!"
.
The people in line BUSTED UP!!!
.
The clerk gingerly took my money between thumb and fingertip and put my change on the
counter so she didn't have to make any contact.
.
Sometimes, a remarkably enjoyable event turns up when you least expect it.

Is "Buddy Taping". Get some surgical gauze or a very small ace bandage and tape it to an unbroken toe next to it to keep it straight.

Medically, there's not much else that can be done for a broken toe. You can't exactly put a cast on it. I've broken my toes several times in the past; I'm a hopeless klutz that bumps into furniture and drops heavy objects on my feet. Just give it time and some over-the-counter pain killers.

Get it checked out not that they can do much with it but get clearance to exercise. I exercised on a bad ankle which ended u p in a surgery and two year layoff. Pain means you have problems and it might not heal correctly which could have long term implications. Good luck

... spent six weeks in the hospital from an infection caused by a broken toe.

Granted, he had undiagnosed and untreated diabetes which certainly didn't help matters.

In his case, he dropped something on his foot. The bone shards are what caused the infection.

I suppose the risk of bone shards is one of the reasons the ER will x-ray your toe. Years ago I stepped on a big nail in a board. Besides the tetanus shot, the doctor ordered an x-ray to rule out a bone chip. Now I know why.

Like others have said up thread, there isn't much to do about a broken toe. But infection IS a risk.
