I'll let somebody else get into the details, but it's bad enough that some staff (mostly managers) did it at the Christmas party.

I first saw it on Saturday Night Live a couple of months ago and and thought it was a passing fad but nooooooooooooooo....

3. Gangnam Do is an upscale neighborhood in Seoul, S. Korea that's full of expensive high rise condos

The song is a parody of people who live there, in that little bit of paradise on the southern bank of the Han River.

We don't have the high rises, of course. Well, except for that half-completed then abandoned concept development on Telegraph at Square Lake - that was a waste of a hundred million dollars.

4. I think maybe a couple of people didn't get the OP's question.

The OP wasn't asking about the video, but what (or, more to the point, where), specifically, is Gangnam.

I have a half-Korean friend, so I knew where Gangnam was, but here is a more detailed excerpt from Wikipedia:

"Until the early 1980s Gangnam and its neighboring areas had remained the least developed in Seoul, but a prodigious development over the last 30 years has earned it a reputation of being one of the most affluent, dynamic, and influential areas in both Seoul and South Korea as a whole"

.......which explains why there even is a concept of "Gangnam style," just like we might say "Manhattan style" or "Hollywood Style"

6. In the 80s, it was just a concept for a development

It's basically in the last 30 years that the place was even built. Before that, it was just a patch of sleepy real estate waiting to be developed.
