I am sitting here listening to the wind going bonkers, trying to convince the trees not to come down on my home or power lines or car.
Then...*BOOM!* I hear a huge thump and then breaking glass, and I am sure my car is toast...but no. The tree came inches from my back bumper, but hit the LR window with my little tree in it.
The little tree is still lit, the window is broken.
I need to go out and take the tree off the horse fence so they don't escape, but I'm afraid I'll get zapped by another tree!
I'm going out anyway, because I'd rather do that than have to chase the horses in this shit.
If I don't make it back in...it was great knowing all of you!
Where the hell is my hard hat when I need it??????

(18,186 posts)Whistling like I'm on the freaking prairie here in the woods.
Very apocalyptic!

(18,186 posts)Thank you!
The wind was almost completely calm while I was out there.

(130,964 posts)GLAD to hear things are OK!
I was so certain my car was smushed when I heard the glass and the sort of crunching sound. It's tree roulette around here when the winds blow, but I thought I'd picked a good spot.
I couldn't believe it was just a LR window broken. And that I can snatch a doubled up one from an unused bedroom, so no $$$ out.
I was really freaking about that car!
Thans for the well wishes!

(52,791 posts)Be CAREFUL out there!
Right now I wish I lived in CO or WA so I could fortify myself with some green courage.
The coffee shaking in my hands will have to do...
Oh Goddess, another big gust....give me courage I ain't got!

(17,045 posts)We have had some serious wind today in Texas! Under a red flag for fire danger... It's been crazy!
Post an update!

(39,961 posts)It was rough. Lost power for 2 hours.
That was not too bad...the tree is about a 40 footer, about 16 inches across where it's on the fence.
Started to get the chainsaw ready but then I decided I didn't want to be running it under another leaner - which is only 6-8 inches across and dead, but right over where I'd have to cut.
So I tied a lunge line across the three posts and that should keep them in. They have been freaking all day with this crazy wind. They got a few carrots and oats to munch on while I was figuring out what to do.
I am so glad they didn't get hurt, that my car is OKAY so far ( breathing huge sigh of relief ) and that the gusts died down while I was out there.
No sleep for me tonight. It's going to be like this into tomorrow, which is why I stayed home rather than partying with friends tonight - gotta keep an eye out for critters in this weather.
Thanks you guys for being here to vent to! Now I'm gonna go get that baked rigatoni waiting for me in the oven and hope no more of the leaners decide this is their moment to take the plunge!
You are a complete bad ass! I'd be freaking out!
Hang on and let us know how you are doing!

(18,186 posts)but I have lived a very full life, all my own kids are grown, so if the Gods and Goddesses decide I'm to go with a tree clonking me on my little bitty noggin, at least I bathed today!
And I am wearing one of Howler's awesome tiedye shirts over a long sleeve red sweater, so I think I was pretty protected lol

(39,961 posts)We had some wicked wind here on the Gulf Coast this morning and lost power for about 2 hours.

(18,186 posts)Supposed to be insane like this until late tomorrow as this front moves through. Down to the 20s.
Maybe some snow showers later, too.
The wind is just crazy in spurts. No power out yet, but earlier today I did tie back a limb that was touching the line. It was too windy to think about cutting it.
Just wish me lots of juju to get through these terrifying winds!!!!
And sorry you lost power, too.
Everybody stay safe, wherever!
Lots of juju

(3,682 posts)I'd rather not go out because it was a hell of a drive this morning and the car will get blown around, but I will come out if I need to. I'll PM you the phone number of my location and you may call if you need it.
Tsiyu
(18,186 posts)If you're where I think you are, NO! Too many trees that way, too.
We can get the neighbor guys out tomorrow if I can't get it cut out of the way myself. It is blocking my car in, so it will have to be moved.
Horses are secure, but thank you for offering, Love.

(3,682 posts)Hoping we don't blow up the house...PMing you with details.
Lokey
(108 posts)Awful windy north as well. We've had quite a bit of rain, got caught in a windy downpour coming out of the store trying to get some last minute shopping in before the snow comes. Saw some remnants of downed limbs in the road on they way home. Still gusting pretty good sounds like it will last into tomorrow.
Fortunately I can't hear it in this part of the house but its howling upstairs. Heard some calls for arcing power lines on the scanner. We haven't had a flicker, but the internet seems to be going in and out. Boy that will ruin my day off if the internet goes out...might have to like clean or something lol
Hopefully you don't lose anymore trees and those horses don't get spooked by anything.
Tsiyu
(18,186 posts)You stay careful, too.
The winds seem to have calmed here for a while, and for that I am thankful. But they are something, aren't they, those winter gales?
Yeah, no internet on one's day off sucks! Means you might have to actually do something productive, dammit!
Thanks for the good wishes. I have a lot of leaners that are dead and need to come down ( some kind of bug eats at the base of them and makes them die ) and I am in the woods, literally.
If the girls will just stay out of the way of any fallers I will be a happy camper!
Stay safe

(23,272 posts)The wind is ferocious here and the poor guy did NOT want to go back outside.
I spent a few minutes trying to get him out by myself but he just flew around like a nitwit.
So I let him rest for about 30 minutes while I waited for reinforcements (my husband and daughter) to get home.
Took ALL of us about 15 minutes before he was tired enough and capitulated to our efforts to shoo him out. I felt really bad. Its damn cold and windy out there. We had the doors WIDE open and he would actually land in the open doorway and then catapult himself back inside instead of going out.
I would have let him stay but the 4 cats had already made some crazy manic lunges for him before I managed to corral all of them into the bathroom. He would have been cat chow within an hour if I let him stay inside (or dog chow when the Jack Russell came in. She's a fierce predator whose already killed more than her fair share of animals in her 2 short years....)
Glad you are okay and everything's still holding together at your place!

(18,186 posts)He was probably so happy he found this warm, bright little world!
Glad you got him out, though, or red feathers would have been all that was left lol.
I love the way cardinals chirp when they eat, and how they stick around even in the snowy months.
Thanks for your well wishes. It's a lot better out there right now, so I am keeping my toes and fingers crossed to have no more excitement. Already replaced the window and will deal with the broken glass tomorrow.
I wish I could put these two mares on the back of my property, but I don't dare during hunting season. Last week, I was burning leaves out back and heard someone putting up a tree stand within sight of that paddock. I stared in that direction and they stopped, then a female voice said "I told you this was a bad spot!"
I don't mind if people hunt back there, but FFS ask. And I can't put the girls back there without worrying they'll be mistaken for game!
Stay safe, Woman! And hopefully you'll have no more surprise visitors!
