My fiancee will not let me see her dress before the wedding. Is this really a thing?

(56,582 posts)I'm writing the music for the wedding; I'd like to know how the dress looks to do that.

(56,582 posts)No, she hasn't, because this is something I'm making for her and I want it to be a surprise. And suddenly it makes sense.

(14,120 posts)If she is superstitious, forget it! If she is and you try to go behind her back to see it and she finds out, she WILL call off the wedding. And she could go as far as dumping you for the betrayal. It can be THAT important for some brides. Treed lightly.

(56,582 posts)She's Hindu so there's that whole thing there (though she's only wearing the sari for our Indian wedding next winter.)
I do think we're past dumping one another, but your warning is noted!

(14,120 posts)Take double caution! I was writing from Western European outlook. But they have a very similar belief and it is very touchy.

(56,582 posts)She has been a foreign service officer for as long as I was a U.S. Marine. We both love this country deeply and serve it as we are called to. She is basically the American success story: her parents were immigrants from India who legally obtained citizenship, and she got into Berkeley based on how unbelievably smart she is. And now I get to represent the country with her. Life is good.

(14,120 posts)And you do get a glimpse before the wedding, don't ever let her find out you did. She WILL divorce you because she will not want to be in a cursed marriage. Beware. She may not show signs of being that superstitious, but this is very different case for many women.

(56,582 posts)She likes that about me. I have no doubt I will.
I did talk her into morning dress for the wedding, at least, so I will be appropriately dressed, unlike those chumps who wear tuxedos before noon. What are they, farmers?

(13,421 posts)Our wedding was probably not "typical" in most ways. Come to think of it, after almost 20 years I think it's safe to say our marriage hasn't been run of the mill either...
Love him still and marrying him is one of the best things I've ever done in my life.

Giver her a break. It's OK to be surprised at the "big show"

*on edit--my wife is from another continent and culture as well, and we speak her language at home.
Here is a pic from our wedding with her dad waiting to "give her away," which after eight years of putting up with me, I guess he was good and ready to do!
