I didn't even pay all that much attention to David Bowie when I was a teen in the '70's (even though I thought he was pretty cool) but I kept thinking all through the song "This is what music is supposed to sound like-and it hasn't for about 25 years."

BTW, to the OP-where can I find your avatar? No bigger Beatles fan than yours truly.
