Just can't find work
I have struggled with this for years, decades. I have one part time job that has been cut in half. I apply for all types of jobs. Most I never hear back. Others I have gone on interview and they pick someone else.
I have tried many things - delivered phone books, built bikes, and higher level jobs but nothing sticks. I get a part time gig, build it up in income to about $15,000 and it crashes or if I get it higher it crashes back to 15 - it is not enough - more outcome than income
Apply for ones I have degree in
Apply for ones I don't need degree
I feel hopeless to find a decent paying job or even a minimum wage job
I have two Master degrees now and they did not make a difference (although the part time job they might have) others don't have a degree and that seems ok but I was told I had to have one. I got one but it did not open more doors. The other person without degree gets more work because he is friend and neighbor of the person who assigned the work. I do not control that. I tried to correct that and instead it got worse. Now I leave it alone so at least I have the part time work.
Age might be affecting once I get the interview - I don't know - the universe is not supporting my direction - I don't know what other direction to go.
I made more money when I had no degree before agencies and people could call and connect without having to submit a resume to even maybe talk to someone.
I went and finished undergrad and got two Masters and the doors are still closed to me

(12,008 posts)I'm about to start my first post-PhD gig. It's going to be great, but it's also only a five month contract, with no chance of extension - it's also in Switzerland, which is going to be interesting, but isn't easy.
I came back to the US this summer with a PhD. I moved in with my brother who got me a job working at a shop attached to a bar. When that ended at the end of summer, I got a job at a warehouse. That is in contrast to how I was living with my parents and working at a video store after I finished my master's degree.
The thing is, I only got these degrees because it was something I wanted to do. I didn't expect to get jobs from them, but at the same time, I thought they'd give me a better chance of getting jobs in my field that I did want, but that doesn't seem to really be the case.

The other two were less time
IT for anyone over 40 is a closed door from what I can tell unless you are already working for a company there is no way to stay current on each version and HR and headhunters will not let you through the gate
My education degree is something it seems everyone has - did an interview with 10 people - they had lots of applicants - all it takes is for one of those 10 not to like you or your answer and you are dead in the water - got the standard form rejection - we are impress - we picked someone else - first time I got one of those in a email
