a kennedy

Maybe it has to do with your user name? This was brought up in another thread....and got me to

thinking......does anyone think I should request a name change?? I'd really like something clever or snarky or humorous. a kennedy is what I am, it's not who I am, know what I mean?? May-be I could raffle off for a new name say, for a DU membership, would that be allowed?? ha ha.... I've never really enjoyed my moniker. Are there any rules or any way I could change my name?? Just asking. Thanks.

Yeah, you might want to change it, considering its etymology: kentauros Jan 2013 #1

and it raised my eyebrows a bit when I saw it.

Seems like DU does the name-changing not long after every major election cycle, and I don't recall seeing one yet this time. Maybe ask in Meta if it will be done again. Otherwise, you'd have to start a whole new account.

I'm sure Loungers will come up with some imaginative names for you

What's wrong with Ugly Head?

That's just so wrong. From now on I will always remember a kennedy as 'ugly head'.

I'm 'Unkempt One'!

Yep, my family came over from Ireland with the name Quigley. I'd trade for Kennedy!

But, seriously, were the Irish that cruel to each other that they had to come up with the most insulting names possible for their neighbors?

Stupid boring stripey thing with stupid things on it.

You're probably right. I can imagine them sitting at a pub, "Hey, Padraic! What's up with that hair? From now on I'm calling you Quigley! Try a comb!"

"Oh, yeah, Seamus? You've got one ugly head!"

for the odd

Here's another interpretation of Quigley:

Derived from Middle English quik or Old English cwic, which both mean "lively". It is an English nickname for an agile person. This is also sometimes a place name derived from the place where cinch grass grew: it was a quick-growing grass.

And from the same site, for Kennedy:
From the Irish Gaelic Ó Cinnéidigh meaning "decendent of CENNÉTIG". This surname was borne by assassinated American president John F. Kennedy (1917-1963).

CENNÉTIG
Old Irish byname meaning "armoured head" or "misshapen head". This was the name of an Irish king, the father of Brian Boru.

the Scots did the same thing to each other

My married name is the English spelling of the Scots, "Urquhart", which I often suspect really means, "Assholes living on the shores of a lake with a big nasty water monster swimming around in it"

Urquhart
Derived from Welsh ar "by", cardden "thicket". This is the name of several places, the most famous one being north of Loch Ness.
