it's still going too. Some of the drifts are about 4' or so - hard to tell how much we have so far...hubby had to shovel for the dog - who went out and just turned around and came back in.
from the local PD -
***WARNING***WARNING****WARNING****
Please, if you can stay off the roads this morning you will be doing yourself a favor. The roads in Rockland are treacherous and due to the amount of snow and driving winds we can not keep them clear for safe vehicle traffic. PW has been working around the clock to try and keep up with the storm but soon after a road is plowed the wind and snow fill it back in with several feet deep drifts. Stay home if you can, stay off the roads until the storm weakens. If you do have to venture out, make sure you have safety equipment with you, warm cloths and boots, and a cell phone because if you get stuck you may be there for some time until our local towing services can get to you and their list is growing and the roads are not making it easier for them either. We will update the general public as conditions improve. Police and Fire are prepared with the proper equipment and vehicles to respond to emergencies.
edited to add..I took this pic at 4:30 am - it's not quite 6 am yet, and the snow is covering the headlights, and is up to the door handle.

(9,902 posts)oh, and water for flushing the toilet and drinking water in case we lose the power.
on the upside, it's very light snow, easy for shoveling, but great for drifting. Crews can't keep up.

(14,881 posts)My horse has enough water in the barn for 2 days and she can help herself to at least one extra bale of hay. good thing because it may take that long for me to reach her!
The snow is drifted 5 feet against one front door and about 4 against the other, but that one's frame got damaged in the crazy wind storm we had a few weeks ago.
The back door has about a 4 foot drift, but there is a gap of 12 inches or so with only 3 feet to push against, so that may be my best bet.
Except that while I was typing the above I suddenly remembered seeing some of the green bulkhead. just check. it may be easiest for me to exit out the basement and shovel out a door from there!
Boy that wind was loud starting around 11 or midnight last night. It's not as loud this morning, but has shifted direction some.
My snow plower bravely showed up around 9pm last night and plowed a quick couple strips. Wasted effort. You can't tell he was here. And the path I shoveled to the barn yesterday is buried under a deep, deep drift... my first trip down looks to be waist high or better.
Per last night's forecast, 8 more inches to go...

(2,939 posts)Still coming down, but more concerned about wind. I think there's about 2 feet on the ground where it's not drifting.

(9,902 posts)two huge ones just under the living room windows - I'm short, (5'11" so they were actually over my head. Crazy, long storm. It snowed from yesterday before 6am until about 8pm tonight. With more snow coming Monday, and Monday night is supposed to be freezing rain..

(14,881 posts)I decided to try the back door so the doggies could follow me (they don't go down the steep, narrow basement steps). I somehow forgot about the embankment the back step sits on and promptly found myself chest-deep. The snow fell back into the doorway and left the storm door propped open so it was snowing into the house. I made a pathway to the NE side of the house which, inexplicably, has about 2 feet of bare ground right next to it. The drift in front of the front door is now over 6 feet high...10 feet if you consider
Luna was peeking out the door, so I called him to follow me. He immediately disappeared back into the house. Jake braved it and then Luna followed.
Treacherous clambor down the steep hill to the barn, sometimes waist deep. I managed to hang onto the small bucket of hot water for Belladonna and Dahli. I was only able to open the barn door about 10", but somehow managed to squeeze through.
High drama on the return. I'm still shaken up. Jakey, who is 8 years old now and has bad hips and who's back has been bothering him the last couple days, collapsed about 30 feet from the house. He just hunkered down shivering and holding his left front paw up. I tried clearing the path for him, but he wouldn't budge. He's 85 pounds so I can't carry him. I tried lifting his hind end and supporting it for him, but he just growled and laid down. He was shivering so hard and covered with snow I rubbed him and rubbed him, trying to warm his hips and back. Suddenly he jumped up and bounded ahead, like nothing had happened.
The storm door and back door had both blown open while we were in the barn, so it was snowing into my sunroom/bedroom. I toweled Jakey and Luna dry and gave them each a cheese ball, Jake's with an aspirin in it. They're hunkered down in bed now.

(9,902 posts):hugs:
for your dog, when his back hurts, if you take a bath towel, fold it lengthwise you can use it as a sling. We had this problem with one of our dogs. Slip it around your dog's belly and you can help him lift himself - I was able to do it, and Allie was an 80 chocolate lab. Our 15 year old wouldn't brave it by herself today - and we had to shovel a walk way for her - would only go on a leash, which she never does out here.
While reading your post, I noticed your sig pic - I just got a butterfly tattooed on my left arm
magical thyme
(14,881 posts)when he jumped up. I'm remembering the towel sling for the future, though, as he gets older and hips bother him more. I just hate the reminder that he's getting older. The first big change came after he turned 7, and I can see it even more this year. He's slowing down, even when swimming...
I was able to trample down enough of a path to make it a little easier this morning, so I let him come down to the barn while I started the big shoveling out.
Your butterfly is beautiful! The detail is amazing. You're braver than I am. No tattoos and no holes other than the ones I was born with!

(9,902 posts)peanut is snugged into bed - it just stopped snowing. Had a blast today throwing her up into snow drifts that are about 5'10" (apx. my husband's height). Cars are dug out, driveway is clear. Time for us adults to chill from the past two days
