(This was all brought on by my earlier post regarding childhood nightmares.)
It was the mid 1980s. I was probably around 5 years old at the time. My parents didn't let me watch scary movies, but I remember having a babysitter who was watching this horror/science fiction movie on television that gave me nightmares. Problem is, I have no idea what the movie was called.
From what I can remember, it was in color so it probably wasn't earlier than the late 1960s.
I believe it took place either at a military base or a hospital, or perhaps it was a military hospital.
And the military base/hospital/military hospital was overrun by these alien creatures with long octopus like tenacles. I believe they made shrieking or squealing noises too.
Was this a real movie? I swear it was, but my google searching hasn't revealed anything.

(43,182 posts)Concept sounds vaguely familar, but I remember there being a female character (a nurse perhaps) on the base/hospital and the Thing had an all male cast.

(30,947 posts)There was a woman in the original film and she was part of the research team.

(14,400 posts)it used to show up on the late show sometimes and I'd always make sure I'd be ready for it.

Do you remember anything else?

(36,434 posts)Navy base with hospital near the Sultan Sea. 1957. Hans Conrad is the only redeeming element to the entire film.
An inspection officer, Lt. Cmdr. John Twillinger, goes out to sea to investigate the disappearance of 3 naval officers that were part of a routine parachute jump. He finds a boat that's been deserted - but it has a strange substance on it. Suddenly 2 of the 3 naval officers' bodies rises up from below the surface. 1 of the bodies happens to be shriveled up. John takes the substance to Dr. Jess Rogers to have it analyzed.

(43,182 posts)I can't confirm that this is it, though. I don't know if I ever will be able to identify it for sure.
That scene 51 minutes seems similar to what I remember. I do remember one scene where a female nurse type character was surprised by one of the creatures.
On edit: I'm 60%-70% certain this might be it.
Regardless of whether this is it or not, it looks hokey now. But it could have been terrifying for a 5 year old.
