http://www.novanewsnow.com/section/2013-02-18/article-3179752/Rescue-teams-search-through-the-night/1WOODS HARBOUR People quietly filed into Calvary United Baptist Church in Woods Harbour on Monday evening as a powerful northwest wind shrieked around corners, sending snow to sting the eyes and face.
Two by two, or in small groups, they came. Mothers, fathers, the elderly and high school friends of the missing fishermen.
They came to pray. They came to hope for a miracle.
Pastor Phil Williams shovelled and salted and turned up the lights at the end of a harrowing day as people came from communities far beyond Woods Harbour.
Late in the afternoon, the emergency pagers worn by volunteer firefighters in the community went off. A dispatchers voice was heard next, announcing the prayer vigil.
And just before 6 p.m., the church bell began to peal, as if to summon people from one end of the village to the other.
Inside the sanctuary, one Bible passage that was repeated over and over was Psalm 46, verse 1.
God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in time of trouble, Williams said as people took their seats.
The prayer vigil is to inspire people to come together. Its such a tragic time.
The boys have not yet been found, and as a community were rallying together and supporting one another and praying that somehow they will be found.
Most villagers referred to the missing fishing crew as the boys or the kids. One of them is in his early 30s, with the remainder not yet out of their 20s. Some have young children.
We will be here as long as people are coming and going, Williams said.
Some folks prayed out loud, others quietly from their seats. There was to be a sacred song or two.
The pastor had visited with family members Monday and said the information coming to them is very limited.
We do not know any more, he said. Just pray for a miracle.
Woods Harbour fisherman Davis Nickerson attended the prayer vigil.
The community is in a very solemn mood, yet theyre very hopeful, he said.
We cant give up hope. Were praying for a miracle here. Were hopeful these boys will be found.
Everyone stopping by the general store in Woods Harbour spoke of the tragedy.
Theyre all sad, said store owner and local municipal councillor George El-Jakl. Theyre all looking for a miracle to happen. We are all praying.
I came to this community from far away and (now) they are my family. Ive seen those kids around my store. I know them all.
