Three things I have learned since moving to Pahrump Nevada in September:
1). The stories you've heard about rampant meth usage are true
2). In terms of "attractive people" in the traditional sense, this ain't Los Angeles or San Francisco or Santa Monica. That said, it's like dogs in heat here, everybody is climbing on someone. Except me. That part of my libido is still back in Silicon Valley.
3). People lie, cheat, steal, and generally fuck you over EVERYWHERE, but in Silicon Valley, it was "evened out" among the sheer numbers of people involved. Here, it stands out more, because there are fewer people. If you move here, trust NO ONE except your MOM, and then only give her six months, because once she's lived here for a while and becomes a native, she might fuck you over, too.
That is all. See ya.

(30,885 posts)Silicon Valley economy kept taking as prices kept going up. Don't get me wrong, this place is a trip and a half and I love it here, but it is a small town cesspool. Maybe it's the fact that I was born and raised in a small town, and that Silicon Valley's charm has basically vanished unless you like chronic overcrowding.

(716 posts)I'm familiar with chronic overcrowding, and small town issues. I understand.

(49,990 posts)I'm originally from a town of a thousand. Not so much fucking people over. But a lot of nosey people. Everyone knew everyone else's business.

(21,020 posts)We're about 1300 people here, swelling to maybe 1500 when the New Yorkers invade the area during the summer.
Everyone knows everyone else's business...either via gossip, or through the small local weekly newspaper.
Fucking over of people isn't common here but does happen occasionally. Last instance was last year when the guy in charge of the transfer station (fancy word for town dump) got to be the scapegoat in a scandal that didn't need to happen.
Otherwise, it's like a big dysfunctional (and often hilarious) family here.

(16,245 posts)They are oppressive. Give me the anonymity of the city any day. I say this, despite having recently moved to a small town for my job. I'm the the process of getting myself out of it as quickly as I can.

It's a town outside of Sheboygan.
What bugged me was the way anyone not in the "founders" (families who had been in the town for decades, or a century or more) were treated.
They were always "outsiders."
This song I could relate to.

I may not be crazy about the CA high dez, but I'll stay in Antelope Valley, thank you very much.

(30,947 posts)until I moved to Georgia and settled in Woodstock, GA. It is not that terribly small with 10,050 residents at last count. But it beats living in Miami with a population of over 2 million. Even though it is close to Atlanta, we have very little crime here.

(23,272 posts)Definitely big enough that you can be anonymous if you choose but still a very small town geographically.
And I love Chicago! We can get there by train or car in under an hour for my big city fix.

(6,028 posts)Small town, 4200 pop at the time in the '70s, it was the county seat. I'm from KC, wife from Tulsa via Dallas, so small town was a new experience.
1. We had a doctor shoot a banker behind the Dillon's grocery store while the banker was making out with doctor's wife. The doctor was found guilty but got a mistrial. DA failed to file charges for second trial within the time limit, doctor got off. Banker lived. Wife left town.
2. Had the city librarian harangue the city council for months for more money, more attention for the library. So they gave in, but first did an audit and found she'd been embezzling library funds for years. Total about $2000. But at 5 cents per day for overdues....
3. Had a guy get drunk and cut down a dozen or so trees on the city square, ala Cool Hand Luke.
4. Had 2 town drunks, both wealthy, but in the final stages of cirrhosis
5. After blizzards, the farmers would drive their monster tractors to town and clear the snow from hospital, nursing homes, schools. This is not a bad thing, but uniquely small town.
It was fun for us, we didn't know the social strata so we mixed with all of the groups. None could understand why we socializing with the others.
