Tomorrow is the anniversary of the DKs last concert. The event was at UC Davis in 1986.
Anyone like the DKs?

Laaz Rocket does a pretty good cover of that one but nothing beats the Dead Kennedys

(12,132 posts)There's a band, sans Jello, touring as DK nowadays but I haven't heard if they are any good. I kinda think it's not DK without Biafra.
Some bands can get away with that but not them.
But Jello shows up in some pretty cool places - he's contributed vocals to one my other favorite bands, Napalm Death and Barney of ND is a huge fan of DK. They cover Nazi Punks Fuck Off in every show I've seen and I assume most, if not all, of the ones I haven't.
That reminds me, I need to add Dead Kennedys to my vinyl hunt. I've recently decided to start collecting vinyl records again and I think all my current DK is on CD (or stolen from the internet lol)...
and the Napalm Death cover:
Punk ain't no religious cult
Punk means thinking for yourself
You ain't hardcore cos you spike your hair
When a jock still lives inside your head
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks-Fuck Off!
Nazi punks
Nazi punks
Nazi punks-Fuck Off!
If you've come to fight, get outa here
You ain't no better than the bouncers
We ain't trying to be police
When you ape the cops it ain't anarchy
[Repeat chorus]
Ten guys jump one, what a man
You fight each other, the police state wins
Stab your backs when you trash our halls
Trash a bank if you've got real balls
You still think swastikas look cool
The real nazis run your schools
They're coaches, businessmen and cops
In a real fourth reich you'll be the first to go
[Repeat chorus]
You'll be the first to go
You'll be the first to go
You'll be the first to go
Unless you think

They both reside in a place of honor next to the Gang of Four's
"Outside The Trains Don't Run On Time/He'd Send InThe Army"....

(12,132 posts)I'm gonna have to seriously start digging through some used record stores to find some of that stuff. I love Gang of Four too but I'm not as experienced with them...I need to fix that.

(11,797 posts)Grew up listening to the Dead Kennedys. My husband and I are old fart punkers (well, I'm in the Wednesdays of my 30s and he's in the Saturdays of his, so we're not that old).

(11,797 posts)age is a number I don't pay much attention to. But, sometimes the young'uns in my gym make me feel ancient

(12,132 posts)in the early~mid eighties I went to a tech school and had a "cafeteria friend" (Meaning we hung out at break times and smoked cigs together but it never went farther than that) and she is the one who really introduced me to the Dead Kennedys.
She had bright, multi-colored hair and a lot of other punk attributes so she stood out from most of the kids but I liked her and enjoyed hanging out with her (at least, until I started seriously dating the girl who is now my wife). I was skinny and had long hair and had come from a Led Zeppelin world of hard rock and metal but she played me some cool stuff from her Kennedys.
I remember teasing each other - she would see me come up and say "Hey Dead Zeppelin" and I'd say "Hey Led Kennedys" and we had stupid fun laughing at that.
I wish I knew if Heather is doing OK today. I'd definitely like to thank her for turning me on to some great hardcore and punk music.
