(34,136 posts)And it has the history thing going. Plus, there is a strong artist community there. Around St. Augustine there are a lot of really cool historical sites, much more than just the fort.
Sarasota is where what her face, the Secretary of State that allowed the voter purge while she was the state chairman of Bush's campaign in 2000 - Katherine Harris. AND they elected her to Congress after that!

(5,739 posts)Sorry, sarasota has nothing on the natural beauty and history of Saint Augustine. Whenever I have friends come in from out of state I ALWAYS take them to Saint Augustine and they ALWAYS have an absolute blast.

(24,890 posts)But...aside from the comments above, which are accurate...You can leave FL faster from St. Augustine-- so, if you want to get up into the mountains of GA, SC, or NC....it's hours faster-

and I visit both Sarasota and St Augustine for fun now.
Sarasota has a cool Amish community with some GREAT food and handcrafted stuff.
St Augustine has the history and also some great food.
We stayed at the Casablanca B&B on Matanzas Bay for our 25th anniversary and had a blast, We had a second floor room overlooking the main street/bay and it was great lounging on the balcony drinking scotch and smoking cigars.
