What's on the market these days? I have someone who just learned they have a grand plus in dental work to pay for because they brush, but, apparently flossing, not so good.

(36,827 posts)Brushing prevents certain types of cavities, but if you visit the dentist every few years it's unlikely you'll lose a tooth to it. Flossing affects teeth and gum health.
Water piks aren't really a good substitute for flossing. It's kind of like the sprayer on your sink. It's great for removing the big stuff, but to actually clean thoroughly you need something to contact the surface and break the bond between food and your teeth and gums.
Fortunately for me when I was in my early 20's I worked with a lot of guys in their 40's and 50's who were having very expensive and painful teeth and gum work done. Two of them described the process of going to a periodontist and having their gums sliced open and peeled back one quarter at a time. I made up my mind that I didn't want to be in their situation when I got to their age. Now that I am I'm glad I've taken good care of my teeth. Except for my wisdom teeth I have all the originals and they are all in good shape.
