Goddamn people who cry wolf.

You know, it might be a bad time, since there's a blizzard and all...To test the tornado alarm (for the whole town) and the fire alarm (for the building I live in) at THE SAME TIME.

I went on full panic mode! Blast them.

Did you remember to wear clean underwear, just in case you got into an accident?

Oh yes, forgot to mention, I used to live about 100 ft away from the Fire Station in a small town. Goddamn, that siren was loud when it went off.

As well as pretty much any other place. I also live by a band shell and the train station, so I'm no stranger to noise. The worst thing is actually the church bells...

Oh yeah, and the carnival I suppose.

...to open the doors, stick my head in the (unstaffed) radio room to see if I could hear what was what, and on the odd occasion be ringing the bell that signified it was a town fire, all usually well before any members of the brigade arrived.

3. Those alarms

were the bane of my child/teenager hood.

Every Friday at noon public buildings would test their air raid alarms. You know...those huge yellow things on the roof.

The wail from those things was blood-chilling and would send me into a panic every time.

As far as the crying wolf thing...I'm in New England and the forecast models can't seem to agree on how bad the impending storm is going to be, so nobody wants to cry wolf.

Yet.

The first Tuesday of every month at 10 AM, from March-October. March 1 is the beginning of meteorological Spring, and also the start of tornado season. And yes, it made me jump, too! What's eerier, to me, is that after they test the tornado sirens, they test the air-raid sirens...which I hope I never hear for real in my life, ever!
