pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)I enjoyed my visits there. I always liked Arroyo Grande--maybe just because it has such a great name.
Pea Soup Andersen's at Buellton is overrated, but Solvang was always a fun trip.
Mom passed in a hospital in Lompoc, and it was the rare reunion of all of us three brothers together then that caused me to return to CA 13 years ago. The pull of family...
We lost my little brother, Jim, a couple years ago, but his widow still lives in Lompoc. My older brother and I are in the Antelope Valley (North L.A. County high desert), just a couple miles down the road from each other. And we were able to get together with Jim a lot on many visits after I moved back and before we lost him.
Here's one of Jim and me...
And all three of us on a fishing trip...
bluesbassman
(19,378 posts)May they both rest in peace.
I hear you about Andersons, still something everybody should do once just to say they did it. Solvang is a cool spot, one of my branches was there. Used to crack me up when I'd pull into the parking lot and there'd be an Aston Martin, or Jaguar, or Mercedes sitting there covered in dirt 'cause the horse ranch owner just didn't care.
When I first transferred down there I had a place in Oceano with a view of the Pismo Dunes. Ended up buying a place out near Lopez Lake in Arroyo Grande. Really loved it there, but you're kinda land locked. Three hours drive to LA or SF so you either get into the outdoor life or twiddle your thumbs. Probably be more my speed now, but I was in my late twenties then and not quite ready to settle down.

(53,339 posts)My mother and my little brother and his family lived in Lompoc, and my brother, Jim, worked at Vandenberg as a civilian heading labor relations for the AF in the Western states region. As a base employee, he was allowed to bring visitors in to fish on base, so my older brother and I would do outings there with Jim.
We just had to watch out for ticks when we walked through the brush to the beach. Jim contracted Lyme Disease that way...

(53,339 posts)The resemblance is striking. It was strictly a platonic friendship, but we were close. Joanne had a wonderful husband and kids back in NJ.
Working at the Wall, I got to meet and develop friendships with a lot of wonderful people like Joanne who had a connection there and often would return each year for the Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances. Those were special times when it was like a reunion and we all got to see each other again.
I always advised vets who weren't quite ready to make a trip to the Wall yet that when they finally were ready, try to do it during one of those two holidays when there would be plenty of brother and sister VN vets around and they'd have the benefit of a very supportive atmosphere for that very difficult first trip.
Joanne wasn't a vet--but she was family. A very special, wonderful, caring lady. We've lost touch now, but if I ran into her today it would be like picking up from yesterday...

riqster
(13,986 posts)I had two at one time, both stolen Quite rare and wonderful instruments. After that, I bought the cheapest Fender Bass I could find for live work.
The new Epis are OK, but I have grown accustomed to having the low B string. For blues, country, reggae and other roots music, that extra depth adds a lot of emotion to the tunes.
I also have a 7-string for recording, but I only use the same five strings, and rarely go above the 10th fret. Its value is in the intonation - the scale is 35", and that low B is a by-the-gods B.
bluesbassman
(19,378 posts)Such a drag to have them ripped off! I love the Gibson tone, but just never made the plunge to get a real one. The Epi kind of fell in my lap. My fingers are a bit short for more than four strings. I have a Squire PBass 5 string that I picked up to have the low B, but rarely use it because of the neck width. Should really try to find something that I can comfortably play because that low B definitely comes in handy!
Main performing instruments are an American Precision Deluxe and a Modified Mexican Jazz (started life as a fretless, replaced the neck with a Mity Mite fretted neck and a Hipshot bridge).
