I just examined a baby who was following up on a hospital visit due to physical abuse. Sweetest, most angelic thing you've ever seen. And a face covered with bruises and abrasions. I swear, sometimes I want to commit murder.
She's with a very nice foster mother right now. The guy who did it is in the slam. And the baby is safe. But I just about lost it in front of her foster mother. (No, wait; I did lose it; had to turn away for a few seconds...)
The exam went well; she's well-fed, not skittish or anything, and she was smiling at me by the time I was done.
But I'm reminded of the line from George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four": 'The urge to shout a stream of profanities at the top of his lungs was stronger than ever.'

Poor sweet innocent baby. In better, safer care now, I hope.

(66,462 posts)I have to extend some sympathy to the foster mother. She told me she was getting horrifed looks at the mall and the supermarket. Not only is she caring for an abused child, people think she is the abuser. Now, there's a thankless job. Except I did thank her for keeping the little girl safe...

Spent a whole career being as calm and rational as could be defusing crisis situations with out of control adults,
but simply could not work around abused children or animals.
bless you for your coping skills....

You treated her, gently and with kindness, of course she was smiling at you. Babies know who loves them.

Hang in there and hugs to you Aristus!!

According to testimony from her now-grown surviving kids, the woman had an out-of-control temper, and would beat and abuse them for little or even no provocation.
I read about other parents, who add their religion to this, and it's just plain horrifying.

(66,462 posts)If you plan on defending the mother or her boyfriend's right to smack a little child around, and parse my words as to what constitutes abuse and what does not; if you are going to advocate for the rights of child abusers, and excoriate any medical provider who dares to stand up for the rights of a child to a safe and healthy household, you're in the wrong place.
Please leave, as quickly and quietly as possible. Thank you.

(41,991 posts)I'm sure you're aware what this good man needs right now, and I hope you recognize that the world's caregivers need care when they're doing the work that most of us can't bear to do. I see the results of abuse in my practice every day and I'm here to tell you, Aristus is absorbing some outstanding pain. If we can give a modicum of help so he doesn't burn out who are you to interfere. If it wasn't meant to harm but was just clumsy have the grace to say so and I expect you'd get support as well.

I will never get forgive myself nor the mother that allowed it or the man that killed her.

(11,925 posts)and i wouldn't be a good animal cop either,or if you look at it another way I may make a very good one.Because after seeing the abuse, knowing how abuse affected me I'd cut to the chase and put a bullet in the assholes head instead of playing nice with monsters and letting him go to jail to be released in a year for"good behavior".Psychopaths don't care, and never will care about anyone else so why should we care about the lives of sociopaths that abuse babies.

You stand between the defenseless and life's desolation.
Hand salute.
And one for the foster mother.
