then my employer gave me one, so I could be available when I was off work.

A few years later, I got laid off, but it was too late. I was hooked. I had to have a cellphone. So far, I have resisted the so-called smart phones.

Is it a revolution? Or a technical tsunami?

I just got a bluetooth gizmo that fits inside my motorcycle helmet, so I can answer the phone while riding. I have jumped some kind of shark, I think.

I can even make a call if I can figure out how this voice-dialing thing works. Or, I can pull over and make a call, a low-tech but saner method.

over the "bag" phone, a regular handset wired to a bag slung over the shoulder. I think there was a truck battery inside, it was so heavy. I used one a few times, but could never afford to have my own. Those were expensive.

I think the crank was only used to charge the battery.
